New Disney Star Wars Films Failing Test of Time?

As a question

I was going through top movie lists of all time. Was getting ticked at the Rotten Tomatoes critics list seeming to be unreasonably pushed. I like audience / viewer lists, and trust them more.

I noticed the New Star Wars films are not standing up to the test of time? The original three I think stand out because people realize how Lucas pushed the boundaries on special effects.

I was just interested on what other people think. I think Star Wars will always have a fan base. I have fallen from that base. But Disney made Stars Wars into a joke through lame scripts, rush to make money, and tried to push DEI. And they really don’t offer anything new in the spirit of the original three.

It’s something like why the Judas Priest song War Pigs has stood the test of time, and the specific Bush protest song by Eminem has gone into obscurity.

When they cast Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker he was such a horrible actor that it ruined the entire movie for me. Surely there was more believable talent they could have chosen from; made me think they threw the film together as cheaply as they could to start raking in the profits.

Christensen was as good at reading his lines as Joe Biden is at reading his. Both thumbs down from me.

Pretty sure War Pigs was Black Sabbath. Ozzy sang it.

Politics aside, I personally think CGI ruined the motion picture industry. I think people inherently dislike watching things which simply could not happen in reality. Conversely, I think movie goers genuinely appreciate seeing things which can, and do, happen in reality. CGI moved this boundary way over to the extreme side of fantasy.

The minute I see CGI in a movie, I'm out. I'm not talking about animated movies here, but rather action / thriller type genre's where CGI is integrated into scenes to suggest reality.

Without the artistic touch of actual animation.

It wasn’t so much the acting ability but what they had to work with. Lucas’ writing has always been stiff and wooden. Lucas is great with his vision and pushing the bounds of technology, but he is a terrible writer/director. The outliers, in my opinion, are American Grafitti and New Hope.

Your right. I guess Judas Priest has been covering it lately. War Pigs still gets radio play in my area.

I get it. But there was various star wars books and graphic novels that the old fans like myself truly enjoyed that got totally kicked to the curb. Left in the cold.

? More than what. A bunch of dumbed down cinema consumers who have been drugged on cheap vicarious thrills for decades and decades. Yeah, that is who I wouldn't trust at all.

I recall seeing comedy trailers and thinking to myself, gee T, that was funny, maybe there are more funny bits in the movie itself, so I would go. And you know what? Sometimes I found myself laughing at bits here and there, some time I would laugh out loud. But the thing is, I would often laugh alone.

Meanwhile, the movie would get to a scene that had been picked to be in the trailer and guess what, the entire audience would erupt in outright hysterics. Not just once, but each scene that had been in the trailer got strong approval.

So I did my own study over several years and comedy after comedy, this pattern stood up. My conclusion was that audiences were conditioned to agree with what was funny and what was not.

While i"m at it, the continued use of ''laugh tracks'' being used to signal audiences that a skit or a bit or a joke was something to laugh at chokes me up with disgust. What was that sitcom with the brainiac nerds? The Big Bang Theory?
Yeah, that one seemed it might be funny but the laugh track that ran throughout was not comical at all.

A study of those sitcoms and the laugh tracks is revealing. There is a pattern to them, what I call the ''chuckle chuckle guffaw'' pattern. One program after another. Yeah, I don't trust audiences or viewers at all.

As for Disney and Star Wars, what did you expect. Everything Disney touches turns into Cinderella. They are so big they buy everything up and has it over from generation to generation.

Right there, fan bases. That should tell us all we need to know.

I don't think CGI actually ruined movies but the over reliance on CGI is a problem.
Movies like lord of the rings and the abyss used it for enhancement but not to take place of storytelling.

Yeah, I kind of expected this comment, and I do agree with what you are saying; it's a matter of degree. I think part of it too is people trying to cut costs while at the same time trying to create more drama. Just wrecks movies, IMO.

You noted The Abyss, which I really liked. But an example of movies where CGI is way over utilized is the Fast & Furious franchise, especially the later ones.

Yeah, Star Wars will probably always have a fan base but it won’t last forever.
Much like Star Trek, which hasn’t had a good movie or tv show in many years.
Recently there was a Star Trek fan film that made its rounds on YouTube that captures the heart the fans desire. Its reception is clear proof that the fans will respond accordingly when you present their beloved franchise with the respect it deserves.

Star Wars is no different. Imagine Finn from the new trilogy going on a redemption arc to make amends for the evil deeds he has done. But no, they just made him comedy relief. How about Luke not being a whiny putz? How about Rey going on the hero’s journey instead of being perfect at everything? How about Han, after turning his life around, being a good father instead of a smuggler and dead beat dad?

I get your point.
Fury road with actual stunts is far better than any fast and furious movie.
There are also different quality levels of CGI. Not to many things ruin a movie faster than bad effects.

It’s quite sad when movies from the 60s and 70s (2001 & close encounters) are better visually than most current Hollywood outputs.

Thats what I was thinking...

but evidently Judas Priest uses it as their walk out music since around 2011

Rogue One was damn good but the prequels and the other Disney offerings mostly suck, The Mandalorian has its moments but the others were mostly unwatchable. Was hoping Obi-Wan and Boba Fett were going to be well done but they were hit-and-miss at best

I guess I trust audience reviews more than the critics that gave outstanding reviews to the Disney Star Wars movies.

You mean, a remake of episode 4 where they (again) blow up the death star, where Dart Vader is replaced by Kylo Ren ( who wears a Vader-like mask on account of...because) and the male protagonist Luke Skywalker is replaced by female Rey who can do ALL Jedi stuff without training, without Obi-Wan, and without Yoda is NOT super Original and Iconic ????

It's because you hate producer Kathleen Kennedy, you hate women, that's what it is

You are soooo mysoginistic...

There's no point without George Lucas, he has to be involved to some extent. Mandalorian was good, didn't see acolyte, and the clone wars held up well along with the rebels cartoon... Those are the writers who should be making a new movie, except the the last Jedi seriously crippled an already struggling franchise that survives on nostalgia more than anything, kinda like Indiana Jones and Fast and Furious. And don't get me started on the mess that was kylo ren and that comical Palpatine twist. "Somehow, Palpatine returned" No more Star wars unless they have something GOOD and it has Lucas name on it. And don't let Kathleen Kennedy touch it.

I'm a big Star Wars fan. Did read over 50 novels from the expanded novels (brilliant how all authors had to respect the timeline / lore from each other's).
But the Disney movies... From what I remembered the first one was just some kind of lame rehash of the first trilogy with Rey as an insanely lame main character who became a Jedi out of nowhere. Killed Han in a cheap way, and how Leia react hugged Rey was so cringe and unrealistic. The second movie was so mehhh and time wasting, making Luke just a joke. Never saw the third one because .... Well any book was better than the Disney #.
