Back in the old days we had shuttles that could pick up debris and put it in trash bags. See STS-51-A

lol! Don’t worry Elon has a plan. With all his used and dead batteries that will be soon coming out of his cars he will shoot up acid to space and melt his star-link junk.

After that we will for sure never be able to leave this Earth!

I suspect you may be aware of this already, but the collection of space debris is a daunting problem, and not one the Space Shuttle could have ever even made even the tiniest dent in fixing. I write this just to clarify, possibly for others who may not realize, just how difficult of a problem it really is.

In order to grab a piece of space junk, the space 'garbage truck' has to be launched into the same orbit as the junk. Every satellite or piece of debris is launched into a different orbit, and the reason for this should be obvious...to keep them from colliding with one another. Getting into a specific orbit requires planning before the vehicle ever leaves the ground and requires a specific launch window and azimuth. Once in orbit a vehicle can't change from the orbit it is in to a different orbit, they don't carry anywhere near enough fuel to do this. So, our space garbage truck can only collect objects in the exact same, or very similar, orbit as it is launched into.

So far we've kept things simple, just grabbing another intact satellite and disposing of it (generally by de-orbiting said satellite to burn up in the atmosphere). The problem becomes infinitely more complicated when the satellite is in thousands of tiny pieces because it collided with something else. Space collisions are very dynamic because they happen at high velocities, and this sends debris in all directions. The most massive debris will generally stay in its original orbit, but smaller fragments can be deflected (vectored) off into different orbits as a result. Now, all of a sudden, you can't get all the debris from one satellite in a single pass. And, space missions aren't cheap.

When you multiply the number of missions required to clean up the millions of pieces of orbiting debris, all in different orbits, you come up with a staggering sum. It's a real problem and it isn't going away anytime soon.

You can find tons of information on space junk just by searching on "space debris". Entire books and websites are dedicated to it

For the record, this chunk of debris on Mars isn't new. It was first photographed in 2022. The debris in question is the back shell of the Perseverance lander mission originally launched in 2020. The mini-helicopter which photographed this debris was part of the Perseverance mission, so it was in essence photographing its own debris.

There is over 7 tons of debris left by humans on the surface of Mars, and this piece is just one example. In addition to the Perseverance debris, there are hundreds of other examples scattered all over the surface from over 60 years of Mars exploration. Remember, the very first Mars lander mission was launched in 1962.

Thank you! 7 tons of junk will always be left there! No one will ever clean it up!

Since it's Veteran's Day:
and feeling guilty about contributing to space debris:

According to Wikipedia:

On 13 September 1985, Maj. Wilbert D. "Doug" Pearson, flying the "Celestial Eagle" F-15A 76-0084 launched an ASM-135 ASAT about 320 kilometres (200 mi) west of Vandenberg Air Force Base and destroyed the Solwind P78-1 satellite flying at an altitude of 555 kilometres (345 mi). Prior to the launch, the F-15 — flying at Mach 1.22 — executed a 3.8 g0 (37 m/s2) zoom climb at an angle of 65 degrees. The ASM-135 ASAT was automatically launched at 11,600 metres (38,100 ft) while the F-15 was flying at Mach 0.934 (992.2 km/h; 616.5 mph).[8] The 14 kilograms (30 lb) MHV collided with the 910 kilograms (2,000 lb) Solwind P78-1 satellite at closing velocity of 24,000 kilometres per hour (15,000 mph; 6.7 km/s).[10]

NASA learned of U.S. Air Force plans for the Solwind ASAT test in July 1985. NASA modeled the effects of the test. This model determined that debris produced would still be in orbit in the 1990s. It would force NASA to enhance debris shielding for its planned space station.
...
The pieces decayed quickly from orbit, implying a large area-to-mass ratio. According to NASA, as of January 1998, 8 of 285 trackable pieces remained in orbit. The last piece of debris, COSPAR 1979-017GX, SATCAT 16564, deorbited 9 May 2004 according to SATCAT.
ASM-135 ASAT

So I guess I don't feel too guilty.

My small part was actually on:
Flight" 2, 13 November 1984, Missile failed when MHV was directed at a star."

That means either the missile hit the star and failed to knock it down or that the missile fell in the ocean after the fuel was exhausted. I'm going with ocean strike here.

Has it ever occurred to anyone that the reason they find signs of life and junk and other things like that on Mars, is because they're not actually photographing Mars but actually just faking it on earth using remote locations here? Why we believe anything these guys say is beyond me. From them "losing" the original moon landing videos, to the discrepancy of what other space is like in the descriptions from astronauts to the moon rocks turning out to be petrified wood, NASA has ZERO credibility, imo

Look closely there's a tether there, like some entry vehicle attached to a chute system. made in China very possible.

Humans trash up the place wherever they go. It is a form of teraforming to trash Mars before the humans arrive. It makes them feel more at home.

I often carry a plastic shopping bag when walking in the parks and forrests locally. Sometimes it is not enough to hold it all.

BK3:

I applaud you. I do the same.

But i do have personal rule.

I will take 1 bag a day. As long as what i have cleaned, stays relatively clean, i will do the park/trail to completion over time. If it doesnt't, i will find someplace else.

8 times out of 10, i see others doing the same after a few days. Over 2 or 3 weeks, people are friends meeting up and taking on the project.

I dedicate entire hikes to just picking up trash. I carry a garbage bag in my day ruck, too. Though I generally don't small amounts of crap ruin my day, it's not entirely out of the norm to find campsites that looked like a damn Glad bag exploded. Exhausted with the way we treat the planet. What's worse is one particular group seeks to exploit for personal gain!

No. This is not true. Only one that was an obvious fake that did not come from NASA:

When I think about it, when people say "Its not natural" or "synthetic" or stuff of that nature, when referring to things created by man...gosh how do I start this? When, we call ourselves mammals, were part of creation, the human, the man, is part of nature. But somehow the things he does and creates (and this only applies to man?) are not. Why is this? Is this cuz we are dual / spiritual creatures so reality just doesnt let this scenario be described correctly as such, so human words just wont work? Probobly not, but hey, that would be cool.

What if a monkey was to go build a teepee (sorry...A LODGE, lol) out of sticks and leaves in the jungle (just like a bird builds a nest, but ....more elaborate and more materials), and hes the first monkey to do it? Would that structure be considered not natural?

Then, in my mind at least, I keep adding materials, keep adding materials, keep adding materials, until I have a...well lets say a mobile home or a gnarly treehouse, complete with a kitchenette and cable TV?

So I guess what Im getting at, is there a line, a point, where the creations of man.....become (something not of nature, non-natural, synthetic) and then.....unwelcomed. What the heck is that and has anybody tried to describe this?

One could say "well it becomes unwelcomed and a problem, synonymous...with unnatural somehow...if you will" when it becomes a danger, or inconvenience to the rest of the environment? But couldnt we say the same thing about dog-turds, and they leave these little "processed wastes", bacteria filled piles of waste for me to inadvertantly step in, i swear they find me, i dont find them, its like my shoe is a magnet for other peoples dogs poo and not even my own, i dont get that but thats a story for another day...i digress.

I guess I kind of see as the presence of man on earth...its a natural thing, cuz well....here we are, butt naked in a giant friggin garden, and I cant argue with that, cuz im here and I can see myself here on this natural floating rock, just like the birds and the ants. Everything else that exists on this planet, and everything it produces, creates and leaves behind, even the destruction of whole forests by an invasive species, fungus, or a structure being destroyed by termites or carpenter ants......is considered natural. But when humans do anything of the like, it is considered unnatural?

One could even argue "okay, well theres the conscious decisions human make...and that takes part somehow in this classification", I suppose, but, so then are we to say that humans thinking, reasoning, etc...is unnatural?

Im sorry but at this point I have lost the definition of what i started talking about here lol, and I need some coffee, and a dictionary:

Blarg, where was I? Ah, yes, natural.

nat·u·ral
/ˈnaCHər(ə)l,ˈnaCHr(ə)l/
adjective
1.
existing in or caused by nature; not made or caused by humankind. ------""""This""""""! THIS RIGHT HERE.
"carrots contain a natural antiseptic that fights bacteria"
2.
of or in agreement with the character or makeup of, or circumstances surrounding, someone or something.
"sharks have no natural enemies"

I have never looked up the actual definition before, but i find it Highly Freaking Interesting, and even MORE highly suspicious that somebody put "by humankind" on there.......suddenly....oh yes and it feels sudden. I guess this is the point where I start glancing over my shoulders nervously, as a mild paranoia begins to form in the back of my mind.

Who put that in there? And why do I feel that Im taking it personally?

Well after a much mental straining, cognitive constipation, then subsequently a much needed mental respite, I have come to what needs to be answered:
Why is it that Humankind are the assholes that get the "unnatural" label? Am I the only one that finds high powered lasers, particle accelerators, and nuclear fusion reactors, completely friggin natural?!??! nevermind the plastic in the ocean, and we're all going to naturally destroy ourselves as a natural destiny to our natural existence.

I n aturally have a headache. --- _ _ _ ---

k, im done, got it all out of my system....I hope.
And one can only hope, can't one?

What about on the way to Mars, multiple space marts to stock up on supplies and food, refill oxygen etc for the long ride ahead. Like the space diner in Spaceballs with more stores! Hello my baby, hello my darling ....

Love this post, it's actually something I've been thinking about as well. There's a lot of self-loathing/hatred that's been happening with the human species on Earth. But in the end, we're all a part of the same compost heap. We ARE nature, it's just that we went and mixed a bunch of stuff together provided by the Earth itself and called it "technology". Terrific post. 👍
