Police were baffled.

What could have possibly been the motive behind the brutal murders of Alice and Tom Mendoza. At first it was impossible to ascertain, as none could be found. By all accounts they were either loved and or respected by all who had contact with them. No underworld connections, not drug connections, no incidents of road rage come back to haunt them. Nothing.

But there they lay, spread out on their living room floor, pools of gooey blood thickening the carpet beneath the cooling corpses. . Him with a knife stuck in his throat straight through his adams apple and her, sprawled about three feet away with her skull cracked wide open with a bloody porcelain lamp by her side

There was no appearance of robbery as no signs of theft could be found. Besides, the couple basically lived from paycheck to paycheck with less than a thousand dollars in their bank account. So once robbery was ruled out police had to consider the brutality of the double murder.

Forensics were called in and no finger prints other than the couples could be found on the murder weapons. No foot prints in the blood to be tracked for an escape route. It wasn’t until one uniformed officer, there to keep out lookiloos noticed the headlines on that mornings newspaper and handed it to the detectives that the motive became clear.

The detectives looked with scorn at the young officer,’’what’s this got to do with this murder’’. The young officer told them that it needed to be taken into context. ‘’What context’’ they replied. His answer was ,he told them, simple.

Six months ago that years election polling was predicting certain percentages for one party and certain percentages for the other. Three months ago the predictions from the pundits and predictors of election outcomes had narrowed the results for the election down to five or six states that would determine the outcome of the election, an election all agreed would determine the fate of democracy and Western Civilization.

The young officer continued. ‘’Two weeks ago those same ‘’experts’’ had narrowed their prognostications down to five counties, nationwide, that would determine the victor of the election.’’

Those same ‘’experts’’ made headlines again four days ago by pointing to three major suburban cities that would be the determining factor in the vote that had cost billions and billions of dollars spend by all sides vying for the win.

And two days ago, that vision had narrowed further down to one and only one neighborhood in the entirety of one county that would make the difference and determined the fate of mankind.

And here, the young officer pointed to the headline in the morning paper. ‘’Experts have now narrowed down the victor of this years election to those people living at 1585 Lexington Place, APT 7.''

And that of course was the address of the murder. Subsequent investigation noted that one corpse was wearing blue and the other corpse was wearing read.
