'Not America or her politics, not everything is you see. "

Sadly it seems to be so. For a lot of folk.

Starmer is a w@nker and by the looks of things a bastard of the first order ta boot.

About as much use thus far as a chocolate teapot really.

But to compare here in the UK to Russia is simply bullcrap.

Far as i can establish people can still say as they please here in the UK.

As long as they are not spreading racial hatred or inciting others to commit acts of violence.

Thing is.

The thread is about ""Russia"" being gripped by human rights crackdowns.

Not America or her politics, not everything is you see.
My bad. The UN headquarters is in the US.

And the thread has to do with human rights which are being trampled on the world over.

Certainly by every country I’ve mentioned.

Plus in the US, we’ve grown a bit tired of Russia, Russia, Russia for all the ills of the world.

Ya dig?

Israel is not the topic.

I already said that I'm no fan of the UN but surely you can't be blind to the massive authoritarian crackdown on dissent in Russia?
True.

Again if we are talking about human rights being trampled, they certainly get an honorable mention.

But yeah. I see your point. Russia is the worst thing ever.

"But yeah. I see your point. Russia is the worst thing ever."

Hardly.

I think the Nazis and the Japanese in WW2, Pol Pot, Mao etc were worse.

Not particularly.

The title tells us what the threads about.

Maybe we should simply stick to the topic.

Myself included.

They wouldn't report it if it didn't serve a certain narrative. Russia bad but never speak of the bad stuff that Ukraine does.

What, like being invaded?

Post a thread about Ukraine badness. Russia is the topic of this one.

When you start running out of regular military and have to resort to ever increasing conscripts, volunteers, prisoners and whomever you can scrape up...it's important to have the will of the people on your side. Even if that means getting them on your side with an iron fist.

I've said it many times here on ATS; Putin is living in the wrong era.

Two accounts?

You mean the one I created to get my old account reinstated after a log in problem? Which I haven't used since getting back in?

Cheap shot, mate .

By the way, the clue is in the thread title, it's about... Russia.

Eh. That’s debatable.

It’s about UN reports on Russia’s mishandling of human rights.

And I trust the UN a lot. I mean who better to know about human rights than Saudi Arabia right? I mean they were qualified to chair that seat for the UN. Right?

So this thread is about much more than Russia.

But thanks for trying to distill this down to a single country or topic. I mean I know I’m a stupid American and it’s not about me or my country. I was just trying to illuminate and extrapolate. Ya know, compare and contrast.

Alas my short-sighted inability to discern fact from fiction and argument from opinion affects my replies.

There’s enough public knowledge that we don’t have to rely on the UN or MSM to see the things Russia is doing at home.

If you speak against the war, you can be arrested. Whether you’re a normal pleb or a public figure, and it’s well documented.

Hell, after they made protesting the war an offense you can be arrested for, people tried just holding up blank signs. They got arrested.

And you’re right that there are several countries that have similar problems at home, but they’re not taking land in Europe and threatening to use nukes.

Russia acts as if they’re fighting some unjust global system, yet their allies are China, Belarus, Iran, North Korea. All authoritarian countries.

And we could find aspects of the west that need improving, but I also think we’re more free in the west than those countries are.

I can call Biden Mao and Trump Hitler with no fear of recourse. I could go march in the streets with swastikas if I wanted to. They can’t even hold up a blank sign or question a war publicly. China is even worse.

"Mishandling" of human rights?

That's one massive euphemism.

Trampling all over them in iron shod boots, more like.

My thread is actually about Russia.

Please, no whataboutisms.

Even China is distancing itself from Putin's nuke threats, whilst eyeing up some large bits of Russia.

China doesn’t have the luxury of abundant natural resources.

They have manufacturing that isn’t as cheap as it used to be, and their biggest customers are the west.

I don’t think they can afford to be isolated like Russia can. Russia can sell their oil to India who can turn around and sell it to someone else. Not like someone would be able to identify it as Russian oil just by looking at it.
