I just wanted to share this awesome Charo performance from 1977. She is a great flamenco guitarist. I think this is really cool. She's so good!

And may I say her hair is fabulous!

Another underestimated female guitarist and banjo player is Dolly Parton she's great too.

I think as far as men I have to go with Roy Clark and Glen Campbell. Unless we are talking Rock and roll. Then it's gotta be Brian May.

Well what do you guys think? Charo is cool! What are some other great guitarists out there for me to discover? [or Banjo players]?

Roy Clark was off the charts

Rock and Roll
Jimi, Eddie, Randy, Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray immediately come to mind but they can't deny their blues and classical roots.

and speaking of classical guitar.....

Thats the thing there are some damn fine guitarists out there that never get the recognition

Charo is awesome. And definitely under recognized for her talent in the US (but not the rest of the world!).

Another "up and coming guitarist I follow is a kid by the name of Marcin Patrzalek (who is billed simply as "Marcin").

He plays a "percussive" style of guitar that, to my ear not only evokes the flamenco guitar style, also the "sound" of flamenco dance.

It's hard to get past Gary Rossington and Allen Collins on Free Bird.

There's a reason 50 years later every 2-bit concert in the south, people hold up their lighters/now phones and yell Free Bird!

not to mention this song is responsible for more speeding ticket revenue than any other song in the southeast.

Hell Ive been pulled over twice and one time got let go because I told him I was listening to Free Bird

I only vaguely remember her guitar playing.
Just her “hoochy coo” stuff from the days of Johnny Carson.

I looked up other performances of hers and found the above from only 2 years ago.
What a performer and positive person!

Looks like you have to click the link and watch it on Yt.

My favorite rock guitarist was Steve Howe of Yes. Forgive the video quality but here he is playing his 12 string:

In my Jazz world it doesn't get much better than George Benson:

And staying in the Jazz world, there's this one guy who plays his Bass like a guitar. Here he is with one of my fav Jazz drummers, Omar Hakim:

Hope you all enjoy.

In 1992 my wife and I went to Kauai for our 5th anniversary. We decided to have our anniversary dinner at Charo's restaurant in Hanalei. It was a great dinner with the usual Polynesian luau-type entertainment but then the MC said we had a special treat, Charo was there and was going to perform for us! It was mind-blowing, watching her play from less than 20 feet away. I was already a fan but after that a superfan. Nevertheless an unforgettable night and anniversary.
Here's another clip that shows how just how masterful her playing is -

As for rock guitar, it's impossible to pick just one favorite but for all-around talent and range of tones and styles I have to go with Johnny Marr from The Smiths. Always understated, never flashy but incredibly tuneful and creative.

Thats so cool you got to see her play live! I had no idea she played guitar and she is AWESOME! The clip you shared is so good. Do they still have the MDA telethon? Is that not a thing anymore? I wish I saw this one.

The Smiths are another underrated band such cool tunes and nice sound thank you for sharing these.

I haven't thought about Yes in a long time I forgot how many good songs they have. And it seems like they're still together? Wow.

Thanks for sharing the George Benson and Omar Hakim clips so impressive!
