Whoops, just noticed I'd written physically when I meant psychically attacked in the above post, but I think Putin has an irrational fear of the west.
Some of these fears and belief in shamans reminds a little of Himmler.

The culture, through at least entertainment, condones and encourages it.
The Bible says that the god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers.
