Yes, exactly, DTOM.
The domain name can exist even without a website attached (I have one in that exact state). The validity is normally for a year with an annual fee to
be paid close to or on its expiry date. The annual costs are fairly cheap. What can be expensive is to buy an established domain name… for instance,
abovetopsecret.com would fetch a very high price at auction. Conversely, theabovetopsecret.com domain doesn’t belong to anyone and could be bought
very cheaply….

The hosting of the website, data storage, traffic to and from the website, etc. is what costs the most and depends on the type of website (static
blog, forum, E-shop, etc.); it can be paid on a yearly or monthly basis, or any other payment plan in between.
So, the renewal of the domain name was not a surprise to me, but the awkward question DTOM posed is what we would all like to know: Who is paying for
the hosting and why, if there is no interaction from said mysterious owner?
