This isn't a free speech case or a whistleblower case.

If he had ONLY leaked evidence of crimes, ya'll would have a leg to stand on.

The rest was legitimately classified.

what was in the rest?

That's not what he did, so you don't.

He willy nilly dumped an enormous amount of classified material that just happened to include a small percentage that showed wrongdoing. The rest was legitimately classified.

Ya'll need better heroes. This one's a George Floyd.

If he was a hero, you wouldn't need to keep misrepresenting what he did to defend him.

Considering this is a political persecution I see no reason he must be held for accusations of 'classified material'.

How does our law apply to someone outside the country who isn’t a citizen?

Should the UK, Australia or other allies be allowed to snatch US journalists?

This isn’t about people being hero’s. This is about precedents and freedom of speech/press.

I think Assange did a good job at pissing off pretty much every side of the political spectrum in the US and abroad. But I also don’t advocate someone getting jailed because they say stuff I don’t like.

He hasn't thought it well and believes the guy is guilty because the US is accusing him and despite the fact he isn't a US citizen but an Australian who lives in Europe.

US laws don't apply to foreign nationals. The guy isn't a US citizen and nobody has the right to persecute foreign journalists. Having said this the UK has half the responsibility for what happened to him over the last 5 years.

This is just the same as Joe Biden's latest campaign promise, again promising to get rid of Student Loan Debt. There Joe is trying to get the votes of those who have Student Loans. The promise about Mr. Assange is the same thing, Joe is just trying to get the votes of the people who think Mr. Assange should be free. Joe will not keep either promise.

Your argument is valid but I think he may not be motivated by the votes of the Americans who want Assange to be free. I think there is a lot of pressure on this administration to free him given the circumstances and his political persecution by the US

I remember back in the day when most of ATS wanted to see Assange hang. Its nice how the years have changed things.

If you want to deny ignorance then you can't have Assange dead or persecuted and it doesn't matter if you like him or agree with everything he has done.

www.amnesty.org...

Something I didn't know.
On the 11th of April 2024 it marked 5 years since Julian Assange was detained in the high security prison in Belmarsh, London.

It's unbelievable a journalist and whistleblower to be detained for that long for pissing off the US Government. And this has happened in another country the UK! There should be sanctions against the UK for illegally detaining Mr Assagne.

"A small percentage" I know a green energy fan. He thinks that since a small percentage of the overall energy we in the USA, use comes from burning tree's, is no big deal. The problem is, it's millions of tree's a year, to get that small percentage of energy. He also thinks, that since sulphur hexafluoride, exist in the atmosphere at a small percentage, it's no big deal either.

So that small percentage is a very big deal.

If he was a hero, you wouldn't need to keep misrepresenting what he did to defend him.

I keep telling trump and biden support the exact same thing.

Does he have any say in that matter?
The man is legally indicted in a courtroom.
I don't know if the POTUS can 'drop prosecution'.
He can pardon. But 'drop prosecution'?? I dunno ...

If this becomes a Biden campaign topic, it's nothing more than deflection. The voting public has a lot more to worry about than Julian Assange's freedom. If Joe had acted after he was elected, I'd give him some credit but now, it's just the usual pandering.
