I've heard reasonable arguments for Putin wanting him dead, but why now and not before?

This is the big question isn't it. At any point before him being imprisoned and even upon initial arrest, it stands to reason that Navalney's death would have been easier and also provide a level of deniability. While incarcerated however, all that goes away.

Not really; the premise only works if they don't want to get caught and Russia have been open about trying to kill him.

The FSB were caught trying to murder him prior to his incarceration in 2020 using Novichok, the FSB admitted to placing it in his underwear and that he only survived due to the pilot's decision to divert.

They still illegally incarcerated him on his return years and were recently claimed to be again poisoning his food - either way their needs to be an independent examination done. Given the repeated attempts to murder him and his body being covered in bruises and threats against his family post death there's good reason for suspicion.

How long was Navalny in Russian custody?

Two and a bit years, the use of chemical/nerve agents is meant to have been throughout incarceration according to family and lawyers - he was hospitalised from it last year, then vanished within the prison system without a trace until his lawyers found out his wearabouts a couple of months back.

Plenty of smoking gun evidence to warrant a proper investigation.

I'll say it again, if the Russians killed him, that's killed not died, they could quite as easily handed an urn of ashes over to whoever, thereby no chance of finding his cause of death as you can't autopsy ashes.

Would’ve that been legal under Russian law though?

Putin obviously has the means to have his opposition eliminated at will, but he still has to at face value act like his operating within the realms of the law.

2 years then....

Which speaks to both points made of timing.

So...why now?

Maybe, he simply stopped caring. Before he became the pariah of Europe, he tried to keep up the pretence of being a civilized president of a civilized country because he was making business deals with Germany and France. With the introduction of sanctions and most of economic ties with Europe broken, he no longer feels the need to pretend.

I heard an opinion that it was some kind of a "f*ck you, fear me" message to the members of Monachium Conference. Not sure if there's any truth in it but it's a bit weird it happened just before that conference.

So he's trying to save face?

This being 2 years into the special military operation/invasion of Ukraine?

Where the entirety of the west is chomping at the bit for a reason to put boots in Ukraine where they are picking citizens off the street in order to have bodies at the front line?

This makes sense to you?

Didn't the last round of sanctions increase Russias economy?

What's the purpose of sanctions again?

No , Russian law says they have to release the body to next of kin within two days of establishing the cause of death , they claimed the delay was due to a 'chemical examination' that could take 2 weeks to complete but Alexei Navalny's mother gave then a deadline of 2 days , which they adhered to.

Hopefully Alexei Navalny's team took hair and fingernail samples to be independently tested as they will hold evidence if chemicals were used.

There's a further twist in the story with chairwoman of Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation claiming a prisoner exchange deal had been agreed , Navalny was killed days before that happened.

According to Ms Pevchik, Navalny was going to be freed under a humanitarian exchange and US and German officials were involved in the talks.

A spokesman for the German government said on Monday they were aware of reports on a planned prisoner swap, but refused to comment further.

Ms Pevchikh said a plan for the prisoner swap was finally reached in December,

She said Vadim Krasikov - a Russian who was found guilty of shooting former Chechen rebel commander Zelimkhan Khangoshvili in the head at close range in Germany in 2019 - was going to be part of the deal.

I've heard reasonable arguments for the west wanting him killed to make Putin look more like a dictator, but he does a good job of that all by himself.

But as another person with lots of dead bodies surrounding them would say "What difference, at this point, does it make?"

Not before?

Are you forgetting when he was Novichocked?

The West can't even decide whether to send enough weapons to Ukraine to defend itself. And you're talking about putting boots there. This has never been an option. The West is apathetic, afraid. And Putin's message was to make it even more scared.

Not that I have an ability to read his twisted mind. Guess we will never learn the truth.
