It only looks dark from the outside.
From the inside, it would have collected all the light that has ever hit it. It would be burningly bright even for a relatively new black hole.
The reason is that the acceleration of infalling matter causes it to heat and convert to energy, and so not only does it suck in and hold all photons that traverse the Schwarzschild radius, it would also be converting matter to energy (for that extra spicy zing!).
So, roast lamb, extra, extra well done.
