Guardsmen accused of smuggling Ecstasy - Link to Article

Holy smokes! 290,000 pills worth about $2.9-11.6 Million!

How did these guys get permission to take a jet? Were they on some other mission, or can pilots just take off whenever they want (yeah right)? They also said they've done this before, so I really wonder how they are getting the use of a "military jet" to smuggle drugs around the world.

edit: They apparently made the smuggle operation a side-mission of their official mission to deliver training supplies to the Republic of Georgia. This was the last thing they will do for a very long time.

If convicted, the men face a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine on each of one count of conspiracy to import Ecstasy into the United States and one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute Ecstasy, prosecutors said.

Fong admitted he brought pills on three other military flights and that he was paid $10,000 a trip, the complaint said.

Kind of makes you wonder how often this goes on, but undetected. I hope DEA are monitoring flights to & from Afghanistan, to prevent opium/heroin cheaply purchased there from entering US. Let's face it, some miltary are not satisfied with their pay and might succumb to evil temptations when presented with opportunities that circumvent our customs agents.
