Two months after his historic ouster as U.S. House speaker, Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday that he is resigning and will leave Congress by the end of the year.
His announcement capped a stunning end to a House career for the onetime deli counter owner from Bakersfield, California, who ascended through state and national politics to become second in line to the presidency, until a cluster of hard-right conservatives engineered his removal in October.
McCarthy is the only speaker in history to be voted out of the job.

Fox News or a lobbying firm? Maybe a governor?
What will McCarthy do after this?
I understand he's leaving, it's actually a smart thing to do. After his struggles in the House, 15 consecutive votes to get the speakership, and then a record ouster -- there is really no viable path to become a senator, or a president.
I think he will go to Fox News, being who he is. He will want to vent his anger and frustration at Gaetz and everyone else, and when he's done venting he'll accept a cushy position in a lobbying firm. Then he'll start thinking about a governorship, or similar, some return to politics.
Whatever he decides to do later, this leaves the Republican majority one person shorter now, along with losing George Santos. Things just got a bit more difficult for Ron Johnson. No, John Mikkelsen. What's his name, Mitch Johnson?

Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy announced in a Wall Street Journal op-ed [SEE HERE] that he is leaving congress at the end of this year and will not seek reelection.
This announcement follows significant sunlight upon the GOPe wing of the DC Uniparty, as the big ugly battle between the voting base and the detached professional Republican apparatus rages on.
Based on policy advocacy and votes registered, there are approximately 100 establishment GOP House Republicans, who represent DC interests, and approximately 100 Republicans in the House who honor the wishes of their constituents.
It is a pretty even split. However...
