Why am I sad and why am I the saddest,
Should I sing to you - or the world and time?...
Oh! because I can see the outfit of this great lute,
In which the spirit of each of us is entangled.
2
And I know that every joy here has another,
Below yourself, counter-counsel tear,
And I know that every being has its servant,
And I know that sometimes when I bless, I curse.
3
Why am I sad? - because I wouldn't like to be sad
Nor cast a shadow of lies before myself,
To hide what cannot be rejected,
To celebrate what is difficult to cut out.
4
So it makes me sad - sad to the bone -
And this - I don't know if this crowd of people
It's supposed to be a cruel comedy
And sleep, and hum in sleep: "That's the age!"
5
So I'm sad and it's getting worse,
Until both the breast and the being are dehumanized;
And I don't know if it will ever fall into place,
And I don't know when I'll be full...!
6
And I don't know - whether I will be able to not know anymore,
That Life is less and less honored here -
It's getting easier to say
Waking up from sleep:
"Let's go back to sleep again."
