Thousands of fake Facebook accounts shut down by Meta were primed to polarize voters ahead of 2024

Do whatcha gotta do.

I'm kinda isolated so it's the only way I can really keep in touch with people I care about.

To each their own.

No one is forcing you to participate.

Fine.

Personal choice.

I don't find anything interesting in having a FB account but most others I know of have accounts and probably more than one.

I don't like getting friend requests from people I don't know. I gave one profile a chance and sure enough it started messaging me asking for money because of hardships and so forth.

It wascqeird because the profile they ripped off was an exmarine officer and a man of that caliber would never solicit for money from women over claims of hardship.

I talked to the scammer as politely as I could and told him I felt sorry for his situation by impersonating an officer was a serious felony where I come from and advised him to cease and desist.

He actually apologized to me and I hope he reconsiders what he's doing but he's desperate in his country and this is the only way he knows how to entertain sympathies and solicit for financial assistance.

I felt bad for the kid.

I was always wondering people who happen to have 2,00+ friends do they really know all these people?!

I don't really think people can be affected that much by fake online accounts on FB having the purpose of polarising the debate and politics.

I had a FB profile I made that was legit, but that was way back when. Then, after FB announced that they were going to start facial recognition that would tag you, I got out. I changed all the information into F.U.D. (F'ked Up Data), deleted all photos, and unfriended everyone. Then I cancelled the account and came back about a month later as a middle aged black woman to check and see what may have been left of my old account. Now I have another fake profile for "Buck Marsh" that I have actually used on occasion and have just a few of my actual friends and family in my friend list, the rest are other folks named Marsh to throw them off (if possible) and many other strangers from all over that are loosely tied together by music with many that are actually musicians.

Now is Buck Marsh a fake account? Yes and no. The information on my location and interests are close and I am a real person using a single account. I find it's a good source of local information from things like the scanner pages, lost pet pages, city pages, etc. Otherwise, I entertain myself elsewhere and only use FB once or twice a month if that and when I'm there I pretty much ignore everything but my notices that have built up.

Polarization before and during the elections is something natural. I remember the recent elections in my country. Many people went nutty about it. There were plenty of emotional discussions on social networks. I've been always suspicious of Meta's claims. It's renowned for censoring controversial views, especially conservative ones.
