It looks like new robotic age is coming! The USMC are developing new armored recon vehicle called Gladiator. It will resemble a bulky, armored all-terrain vehicle, weighing about a ton, with six wheels. A Marine will control it with a remote.
According to Dimi Apostolopoulos, Carnegie Mellon's lead scientist on the project, the Gladiator will use sensors to warn soldiers about a variety of dangers: enemy positions, barbed wire, mines, and even chemical, biological or nuclear threats. The Gladiator will also be able to detect and avoid obstacles such as craters.

First, the Gladiator's mobility was tested. Military officials were looking for a unit that can function on all types of terrain, in temperatures ranging from 25 degrees below zero to 125 degrees, while withstanding fire from automatic weapons like the AK-47.

Second, the military tested the robot's sensory capabilities.

Eventually, the Marines hope to arm the Gladiator with machine guns and other weapons.

yep we need to have the combinations of unmanned vehicles working with the grunts. iraq would be the perfect place to test it.

They could have at least put a Red Rider on the back of it.

I'm thinking it would serve better as anti-mine/IED or possibly mobile mortar. However I just don't see it bellowing out a $1.20 or a penny nickle nickle. So, MOUT seems to be it's new home in my opinion. Maybe some radar and anti air can fix it up.

Looks like they have some metal storm grenade systems on there, do you know?

Doesnt look like those rocket launchers can withstand small arms fire.

I guess the body of the vehicle is more important to protect then the systems that are going to defend itself and the troops it is supporting. *Rolls eyes*.

And the sensors dont look protected either which negates the second most useful feature of this little remote controlled car.

Im not seeing too much survivability in all these little robots they have been coming out with. They should be solid steel without any hollow spaces in them. THey should have angles that give them low profiles, and they should be tracked for mobility. And their most important features should be the most protected, weapons, sensors, chasis, and control.

But hopefully they have their heads in the right place and they actually have some stuff that is decent.

that sounds like it would work, how bout this....... low to the ground (no more than a foot above) FAST and with a very sharp, very large razorblade on the leading surface. put that with some popup grenade launchers built into the main body-perhaps something that drops landmines out the back, and twin internaly belt fed machine guns on the sides.......

i think that would work

EDIT: plus it has to have a big smileyface on the top

There's nothing about the speed of this thing in the article. With speed being the big thing in the American military in the coming years, how exactly is this going to manage to keep up with the frontlines? Our artillery is already too slow...

thats why i said it should be fast. apart from the image of it cuting off the lower legs of a line of solgers in a deep, narow trench

First of all some of you are not reading what its purpose is. The robot is a recon with limited firepower type not search its not a search and destroy robot.
It only has the weapons to engage you and cause some damage its not meant to kill whole platoons of enemy soldiers. If you shoot at the root good, the Marines know where you are and what you are packing and whey will come and get you.
Plus this robot is not meant to keep up with anything, its deployed when needed, its not going to be driving along side a Humvee going 50mph

This thing is going to have to be deployed on the frontlines for it to be of any use. What exactly is going to take it there?
