Rereintroducing myself

I am back again. My posting has been slim to none the past several years but this new ATS upset has spurred me into wanting to post again. I'm watching the current situation with morbid curiousity

Same. I stopped posting in 2013 and periodically lurked. It was interesting watching the demographic change happen over that time, from the mindset of the majority in 2013 to the mindset of the majority 2020-2023. The focus shift from conspiracy related things to just straight politics.

I've held off posting mainly out of laziness, to be honest. Now I feel the desire to write up all those threads I've been meaning to do.

For me it was laziness and the aversion to engaging in dialogue that devolved into petulant arguments.
I prefer substantive discourse. Even when people disagree, they can have substantive discourse. One of the courses I teach is Writing and Rhetoric, and one of the first things I teach my students is that there is a difference between quarreling and arguing. An argument is a clear line of thinking aimed at proving a point. This requires the ability to communicate effectively. A quarrel is an angry disagreement composed of people who just want to be right. No effective communication required.
