How is it that the Titan submersible has no tactical beacon for recovery? Whose idea was it that this wasn't necessary? This is the equivalent of driving across the Sahara Desert with no spare tire.

$250,000 per person fees but no budget for a $1500 tac beacon. Right.

This ordeal is tragic, but a hard lesson is learned here regarding having a location system. There are many systems that are designed to work in these depths and can be detected from the surface. Someone needs to be accountable for this.

What a tragic way to go. I wonder what they were thinking though when they saw an Xbox controller being used to operate the vessel.

Also wonder who would've benefited from the billionaire whose on board being unalived

It's a private company with no oversight, so they threw together a half-assed submersible with an XBox game controller as a steering mechanism and a door that is bolted shut from the outside.

$250,000.00 per ticket and no trouble finding rich people to buy them. Very sad.

I’m not an expert, so excuse me if I’m completely wrong…

But isn’t water one of the worst mediums for wireless signals? I’m sure with our technology they’ve developed some things that can go through a few thousand feet. But the depths this went are far different than a vast majority of subs.

I haven't been following this story super closely, but everything I've heard sounds like some serious red flags. Lack of planning, lack of quality control, lack of contingency plans-was there even a rescue plan in place? Didn't the ship that dropped them off stand by?

I guess I need to go read more, but frankly it has been so depressing thinking about those poor people.

I'm a mechanical engineer for the Dept of Defense, and the OP both. The tactical beacon would be 500 MHz or above, something easily available to be detected under water at 12,500 feet. Just a simple ping at that frequency would be enough. Voice communication is pretty difficult under water at that depth, but high frequency data-com is not difficult at all. For example, certain types of sonar can travel over 10 miles under water and bounce back.

The fact that the vessel has none of this is disturbing. How do you not think of this scenario?!?!?!?!?

As far as "oxygen levels" in the vessel are really inconsequential. It's high levels of CO2, and hypothermia are the biggest threat down there. When the CO2 level reaches over 1000 ppm and the interior vessel temp goes to 29 degrees F, the subjects in the submersible will essentially just pass out. They probably already have 24 hours ago. There is no recovery of this vessel anytime soon, or if ever...

The next thing to do is make sure this never happens again. Tragic loss.

Yes it's tragic to read about people going missing like this. I wonder if did they possibly fake their deaths and disappear for some reason? Or, is this possibly a distraction from something we're missing all together?

None of it makes any sense. Check the life insurance on the passengers, they're probably all on a beach somewhere laughing at the headlines of this. If not, dumbest idea since cheating an old retarded pervert into the White House in 2020.

Nobody in their right mind would throw together a half-ass submersible/submarine like this and happily risk peoples lives (much less a $30 wireless joystick controller and no rescue beacon) unless they were a ego-maniacal sociopath.

It's always a possibility I suppose, LOL I had a semi-skeptical eye cause the billionaire had some youngish woman he was mentoring. But that's not fair to Hammish or the woman filmmaker/explorer, it is highly likely a benign mentorship, that any wealthy person of means may have.

Still, this is an elaborate ruse to fake a death to be with a woman, open to the slight possibility but what could be the reason? Not to mention, it's not just the billionaire gone missing.

I can see dying in an attempt to do some things but as a billionaire viewing the Titanic isn't one of them. But who am I to determine what he values

Titanic sub mission experts assessing ‘debris field’ found in search area
22 June 2023, 16:56 | Updated: 22 June 2023, 17:05

Experts leading the search effort for the missing OceanGate submersible have found a 'debris field' near the wreck of the Titanic.

The US Coast Guard says the debris is currently being "evaluated" by personnel at the command centre.

Earlier the head of the search operation for the missing Titan submersible has said that it is still an active "search and rescue" mission.

Rear Admiral John Mauger said: "We continue to keep the crew members and families in our thoughts."

But he insisted this is "still an active search and rescue right now", and added: "Conditions for the search and rescue are favourable right now."

The boss of the firm that created the missing Titanic submarine gave an interview last year in which he said “at some point, safety is just pure waste”.

As the search efforts for the missing submersible, Titan, become increasingly desperate, the 2022 interview with boss Stockton Rush re-emerged.

He was discussing the design and mechanics of the crafty on the ‘Unsung Science’ podcast on CBS.

He told journalist David Pogue: “At some point, safety is just pure waste. I mean, if you just want to be safe, don't get out of bed, don't get in your car, don't do anything. At some point, you're going to take some risk, and it really is a risk-reward question."

The media is reporting that a fresh debris field has been found on the ocean floor near the Titanic.

It´s extreme sport inside a ship full of flaws.. to those who can afford it. It was known fact that this ship should only dive to 1300 meters no more.. the man who made security report of the ship that it shouldn´t dive any deeper .. was fired. Navigating was done with gamestick which was worth less than 30 euros..
Company Ocean Gate´s wife Wendy Rush was descendants of Isidor and Ida Straus ( Macy´s ) who lost their life in Titanic, so surely you would think Rush couple would have money to build this ship better.. using joystick ?
Ultimate survival game..

I'm an aerospace engineer, and I would like to add a few more stupid design decisions to the list.

First, constructing the pressure vessel out of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is a really good choice for pressure vessels where the pressure is on the inside. That's because the internal pressure shows up as tensile stress in the carbon fibers and carbon fibers have a pretty high tensile strength. However, when the pressure is on the outside (as it is in a deep diving vessel) the pressure shows up as compressive stress, and the compressive strength of carbon fibers can be as little as 10% as much as the tensile strength. Furthermore, I suspect that a failure in compression could be facilitated if there was significant delamination inside the layup.

Second, the constructor--Oceangate--apparently ignored recommendations to do non-destructive testing of the hull, such as x-rays, which would have detected any delaminations or voids inside the layup.

Third, they apparently used a view port on the vessel that was rated for about 1500 meters of depth, but the Titanic wreck is at about 3800 meters depth. (I read that yesterday, but can't find the reference for it right now.)

In catastrophic failures like this, it is usually the case that more than one part of the system has to fail in order to add up to a catastrophe. This system looks like it had a generous helping of design flaws to choose from.

I'm starting to wonder that myself mate .

No beacon ? No GPS of any kind to locate the vessel ? I find that highly highly HIGHLY unusual and suspect and am I understanding correctly here the vessel is remote controlled ? So no pilot is on board ?

How stupid are these people ? Who in there right mind would even get on this Sub ? I guess bored Rich people.

Some systems on US Navy nuclear submarines use the exact same controller. Why re-invent the wheel?

Supposedly there is an adventurer's club and maybe these people are genuinely adventurers.

I always wonder about people basically cheering people they don't know dying. Regardless of the size of thier bank accounts

Not to mention "rich people" is a relative term, Im sure most Somalians probably would look upon most ATSers as evil rich people, hell people in Jackson Mississippi, and other American locales probably would too.

FWIW for those of us who are still slightly human
