I always knew Mormons have some different beliefs. But it wasn't until I came across this particular post that I began to appreciate how wild these beliefs are.

One strange thing they have been saying for a while is that the Mormon Church is a Christian Denomination! Problem is, from the very beginning Joseph Smith said prayed and asked God (at the age of 15) what church he should join. Supposedly God told Joseph Smith to start his own church and to not go to any other church "because their creeds were all corrupted."

Well you can't have your cake and eat it too. If you say your church represents the restoration of of a church that became corrupt by writing a whole new set of "scriptures, how can you then say you are part of it?

Best thing about mormons: magic underwear.

I think they're kind of cute though, the mormons.

They have and practice the usual Christian beliefs, except their church was founded by Smith who was a con-artist that P. T. Barnum would have admired. His real interest in starting a church was to create a theocratic country he would rule over although it may have started as a search for the one true Christian church when he was a kid.

As a former member of the LDS church, I've done the research that convinced me that Smith was a confidence man and excellent liar. If he had really truly wanted to restore the original church as it was during Jesus's time, he would have read many different real Bibles or at the very least would have given up his possessions and had a 12 man following wander around teaching from King James doing faith healing. He never had divine inspiration, just some elaborate story to give him his fake heavenly authority.

I'm not a member of the (cough) Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (cough), or their protestant (Lol) offshoots, but... Butt.

Apparently even the prophets after Moses like to write things down. I don't see where John the Baptist did that, but in the realm of "God talks to a person and they write those things down", you'll need more cannon fodder than that argument. I mean, look at any Christian bookstore and all those people claiming to hear God and then publishing books upon endless books about what God revealed to them.

Some might claim prophecy. Some of those post here on ATS. #GodWillNotBeMocked
Good times.

I got to meet and know many Mormons when I lived in AZ. Truly some of the kindest and most genuine people I’ve ever met in my life.

A lot of my son’s friends in AZ are Mormon.

I looked forward to seeing the boys who would come around weekly and chat also.

Welcome to ATS.

You realise that this is the introduction forum?

Might be best to start a thread on the topic once you get yourself acclimatised and become accustomed to the site.

Yes,they have some different beliefs, but I have never had any trouble with a Mormon. Unlike some very persistent and obnoxious groups out there, Mormons don't demand I follow their beliefs.

They will always say they're a Christian church because they don't want to be perceived as a cult. (They prefer "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints," rather than "Mormons" for that very reason.)

They'll say they're Christian merely because they follow Christ, completely ignoring the theological issues they don't want to discuss--the biggest being that they're not a trinitarian church. They believe the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are separate, distinct entities, rather than three in one. That belief, in and of itself, makes their religion something other than Christian.
Polytheism is not Christian; it's just that simple.

There's a reason the Catholic church won't accept Mormon baptisms for ex-LDS people who want to become Catholic: they weren't baptized in a trinitarian faith, so it's not a Christian baptism.

Another tenet of their faith is the belief that as man is now, God once was, and as God is now, man can become.
That's kind of a showstopper where Christian theology is concerned. (The whole polytheism thing again.)

And then there's the whole farce known as the Book of Mormon and the fact that cartographers and geographers from BYU have admitted that you have to accept everything it says about the Western hemisphere on faith alone because none of the claims have ever been verified.

I know plenty of LDS people, and they're wonderful, kind folks. Certainly they're free to believe as they choose, but it's not Christian by any theological standard.

I kinda believe this John Smith guy more than the actual bible (any bs modern version of it). They actually HAVE found ancient relics and tablets in the Grand Canyon that have been recently revealed to the public on a limited scope. They are said to have metal tablets with writings on them as well as hieroglyphics all over the interior walls of the canyon that match Egyptian.

He might have actually been onto something, the whole evolve to a better person to "graduate" to a better world. Sounds like he was trying to explain raising ones vibration but might have had some of his messages mixed up or didn't fully comprehend what he was seeing.

For the record I am NOT religious at all period whatsoever.

If its how we feel in our hearts that dictates our destiny when we die then Mormons are probably the closest church to God.

If however its our understanding of God that dictates our destiny when we die Mormons are much the same as any other religion on earth.

Same as the JW, they claim to be a Christian faith, but do not believe that Christ is God, also that the Holy Ghost is only a power that the Father wields. They do however acknowledge Christ as the son of God I believe, but as a prophet.

They also do not want to be seen as a cult, so they are not very forthcoming. If you ask a JW a question, you will never get a direct answer. What you will get, is a wall of biblical text. Also nice people from what I’ve seen.

In other words, our destiny is to become gods of new universes in our turn in an infinite cycle.

I've checked the link in the openng post, and I was going to observe that their research is woefully inaadequate because they left that one out. Though it probably isn't published much to outsiders. One has to show an interest first.

Yes, that’s a good point.
JW’s aren’t a trinitarian faith either.
And you’re right—nice people too.
They’ve knocked on my door more than once.
I don’t agree with what they’re saying, but I’m happy to have a discussion. (Length of discussion can be directly related to the ambient temperature.)

Exactly. There’s an interesting parallel with Freemasonry there. The deeper you go down the rabbit hole…

For example, the LDS claim they’re Christian, but what they’re not saying is that they believe they’re the true Christian church, & the rest of us are part of a 2000+ year apostasy.
