So i live in this old farm, and will do so for another five years or so, was cheap and i am able to save up money, now keeping that in mind, i have to move my stuff upstairs in the winter because of the cold, and downstairs in the summer because of the heat, so do you guys think i could install a carpet in the downstairs bedroom so could sleep in there in the winter? The wooden floor seems to be the biggest problem. There are electric heaters but dont want to blast them because its expensive, has a decent fireplace too, just need to get it a little warmer and less drafty. A penny for your thoughts?

The carpet could help.

Is there anything you could do with the windows?
Are they drafty?

There are plastic film kits made for helping with that for the winter.

Windows are new no draft there, insulation in the walls and roof was replaced a couple of years ago, but its an old house and it breaths from here and there. But going to try the carpet, you dont see those in my country that much, just big and small mats thrown on the floor. Thats why i am curious about those.

Carpets would help with noise as well, echoes in the room.
Carpet and padding might be better than carpet alone.

Also, do they sell oil-filled electric radiators in your country?
We use them during the day to equalize the heat from a forced-air furnace.
I think they are more efficient than space heaters.

Then there are also heavy quilts and nice thick blankets.

We have a basement that somehow stays in the low 40s year round. That makes cold air come up from below even with insulation in the basement ceiling. We put a think wool rug and a rug pad over the hardwood floor. That seems to let the fireplace do it's job.

Yeah i have a small oil-filled radiator in the bathroom to make sure the pipes dont freeze up, also have an air source heat pump (i think they are called that, not sure) it helps, but the bedroom is on the opposite side of the house so that warmth dont quite make it there.

The foundation in here is built so i can crawl around there, and it has been drilled open from several points to increase air flow, and reduce moisture, i keep those openings covered up in the winter but it still gets lots of air movement, and it seems to be the reason why the floor can get chilly.

In cold climates carpeting is a must. We recently had half our house done.
Our carpet has a silk blend and I uprgraded the padding to the highest level.
We are very gentle on carpeting and don’t wear shoes in our house so it should last a very, very long time.

I highly recommend carpeting for your place!

Sometimes it's easier to heat you instead of a building.
Heated mattress pad for bed, small heated throw for your favorite chair.
Have done it this way for years cause it's cheaper than insulating my home.
I also have hardwood floors. Really good house slippers are mandatory. In winter I keep the thermostat on 60 degrees
cause money in my pocket is way better than in the Gas/Electric companies!

is it possible to insulate the ceiling between the two floors? if the rafters are open, some 1 1/2 rigid insulation could be cheap and go a long way.

Well i have a dog, so was just thinking about doing the bedroom, you know, because of the occasional upset stomach of the dog, i would be wary against doing the entire downstairs. have no idea how i would clean that up. we dont keep our shoes on either around here.

A carpet would help a lot and there's loads of options on underlay these days. A good insulation layer under the carpet makes a huge difference.

The biggest problem with only doing one room is how often the doors are opened and how effective they are at insulating. Changing or blocking airflow can result in moulds and damp issues too which might be worth keeping an eye out for.

Thats partly why i was considering doing only one room... Should stay dry, door is always open, fireplace is right behind the door.

One might wonder why i need more warmth, but there is an absolutely huge field on one side of the house, and when the wind blows from there during the winter, you could freeze dry a cow carcass there in 24 hours.

Here’s my tip. Go to a carpeting store and not a big box store.
Carpeting has come a long way and so has padding.

They make padding specifically for people that have pets now that is accident resistant.
I was told my carpet was made to repel stains/spills. I didn’t believe it until one of my kids spilled resin and guess what, it came up!!! I couldn’t believe it.

Eliminating the draft from the flooring would slow the whole process of heat escaping down but it will escape via an open door.

Houses and drafts are a funny thing, air + temperature demands an equilibrium.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-65596282.amp
I remember reading this article the other day and this :

Research by The Leeds Sustainability Institute states that carpets can reduce air leakage by up to a third in some homes, making homes without carpet, lino, or laminate more expensive and difficult to heat.

I'd say the whole ground floor would need doing ideally or you'll be keeping the heating/fire on a lot. Stopping the draft from one room will slow things down but the heat is going to want to travel out.

JAGstorm is right about potentials these days, laminate flooring is a good option too and with the right insulation underneath it would make a huge difference, easy cleaned too. I'd say the bigger culprit is the door but if it needs to stay open sealing the house up in general would be a better bet.
