"But it isn't safe," retorted Erin.

Michael pondered looking at the ceiling, hoping to find the words to make the inevitable more digestible... but nothing of substance came to his mind.

"We're going to have to let you go," he said, before letting a sigh of exasperation.

"You're firing me? After all I've done for this place! I'm the most senior researcher here and my evidence is irrefutable. What's going on?"

He stood up from his chair and walked to the glass panel of his corner office. He put his glasses in his shirt pocket and contemplated the mesmerizing lights of the city skyline. "It comes from higher up. We don't have a choice."

"We don't have a choice? We're the regulator. We make the rules!"

"You don't get it," he insisted. "In times like these, there are people who overrule governments. They are above everything. They are The Science."

As he finished his sentence, two men in black suits walked into the room and put a bag over her head. When they took it off, she was dangling out the top of the building, head down, as the two suits dropped her legs to an unstoppable meeting with the concrete laying hundreds of feet below.

"Don't let me go," she thought to herself, but the only thing that came out of her mouth was a shriek of horror.

Even though the way down only lasted a few seconds, it was long enough for her to reflect on her work, her life, and the deadly pathogen that was going to be marketed as a lifesaving cure.

"If I get reincarnated," she thought, "I want to come back as a virus. Not a lethal one, but one that would render their dangerous injection useless."

At the moment her soul left her shattered body on the city sidewalk, an infected woman in South Africa coughed on a medical worker who was bound to take an airplane for Europe two days later.

It could have been luck. It could have been fate. Or maybe her dying wish was answered by a higher power who saw the wickedness of humanity and still deemed it worthy of redemption.

The End.

PS: Sorry this is post deadline. I just saw this and let this be an out of contest/just for fun entry. Thanks!
