In Japan, crime of the simple- minded person gets more strange by the day.

Here is a classic example what just took place yesterday.

Police in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, said Wednesday they have arrested a 29-year-old woman on suspicion of abandoning the body of her newborn baby by burying it in the garden at her parents’ home.

According to police, Kotomi Minagawa, who is single and lives apart from her parents, has admitted that she buried the infant in the garden after giving birth at her apartment in Naka Ward in mid-April, Kyodo News reported.

Minagawa’s mother was weeding the garden when she found the baby’s remains at around 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday. Police said the infant’s gender could not be determined. There were no visible wounds on the remains which were wrapped in a pink towel and covered with dirt. Police said an autopsy will be conducted to try and determine the cause of death.

Police said Minagawa’s parents told them they were not aware she was pregnant.

Was the baby stillborn, and buried in its grandparents garden out of some sort of grief-driven hope that the child's grandfolks would care for it better than the mother could/did? (The mothers of stillborn babies often feel crushing guilt for their perceived "failure" to deliver a healthy, living child).

Cultural considerations can often play into this guilt.

The mother is single and buried the newborn in her mother's garden. This kind of stuff is not so rare in the bigger cities here. Usually people will find newborns in the alley's trash bins.
I'm sure the mother had her reasons, but to me it seemed odd that she would bury it in her mother's garden. Either way, it is very sad. Adoptions here are still very rare. Usually foster homes or, forgot what they are called here, but are raised in them.
One big facility is in Fukuoka. The wife and I were interested in being a weekend only foster parent due to our work schedule , but we kind of lived a bit distance away. ( not that far, but we had to use the car, which wasn't going to happen, couldn't use the train ). Weekend parenting is favorable here in Japan.

Sorry, the crime is still being investigated. That is all the news that I have.

If the infant was stillborn, what is the crime?

Here in the US, I can imagine the crime would be illegal disposal of a body, or something like that. If the woman killed her newborn, that would be homicide.

Also, most cities here have drop off places, like fire stations and hospitals, where a person can drop off an unwanted baby, no questions asked. Is there something like that where you are?

Exactly now we've got it.
Common logic would surely be enough if one wanted to 'get rid' of a baby and just hand it to someone else.

There would be legal stuff to come into play, like who is the father. Japanese law is very complicated even with adoptions. This is something my Japanese wife had to deal with years ago here in Japan.
Family register that is of all family members . Adopted kids years ago, once found out were and are treated differently in the school system here.

There’s a special reserved VIP section in Hell (fingers crossed, I PRAY) for people who put living souls into garbage cans and yet, it has got to be thee most untraditional/clandestine and yet most common place that people find infants, puppies, kittens, some people even leave raccoons trapped in their bins to get revenge on the simple minded little sweet washbears who dared to eat someone’s leftovers. To condemn anyone to death by either extremely slow and hindered compacting or by being fed onto the belt leading to the giant trash ripper-shredder-pulveriser which would either with much resistance, eventually crush your skull after it could no longer hold it back or rip your body to pieces which would be so fast, you’d be well aware that you were in pieces for several seconds. I just can’t even cope with the thought. Truly, anything, if you just have to be an absolute demonic psychopath monster, anything at all and anywhere on earth BUT the trash is a fate a hundred times more humane. I just think back to that kid crushed in the 90s when he fell into the garbage truck and the compactor went on and the trash guy had a Walkman on his head so he could not hear the cries to stop or the pleading for his life. Even burying alive would be a more merciful way to go and that’s supposed to be just a waking night terror.
