Considering the size of our rail system, that must mean that the whole thing is a decrepit mess. It also means that our government is aware that it is operating at a high risk to workers, citizens, and property.

Are they just letting these “accidents” happen, and only just started allowing them to be reported because they want to shut it all down, and they want the people to be on their side when they pull the plug?

Surprising little. The diesel is for the generation of electricity. All modern trains are diesel-electric. Hybrid only in the same sense that the Chevy Volt is. The Volt uses a gasoline generator to recharge the battery. Trains run directly off the generator. The big round fans on top is part of the braking system to redirect the electricity for the drive to thin sheets of metal cooled by a large fan. That resister gets way hotter than a toaster oven. Without the fan to cool it, it would probably shoot a flame 8-10 feet high from the heat igniting the spacers and paint.

I used to do final assembly on them before shipping them to EMD. GE is the only other manufacturer of locomotives in the US and follows the same design.

That is the Springfield derailment.

212 car train lost 20 cars. They will say zero Haz-Mat on those 20, but not a peep about what was on the rest of the cars.

So was there no Haz-Mat at all or were we very lucky?

Sometimes it takes time for a very simple question to be asked and answered. Today it is being quietly reported that other cars that just happened to not derail, did indeed have Haz-Mat as their load.

TL;DR…They got lucky this time.
