Virginia Fairfax County school board member calls Battle of Iwo Jima evil

Saw this disturbing news item on Fox News:

Contrary to what the school board member says, the Battle of Iwo Jima was a heroic, epic battle by the US, and the Navajo code talkers helped the US Marines win that battle by confusing Japanese code breakers with Navajo-language words.

American forces invaded the island on February 19, 1945, and the ensuing Battle of Iwo Jima lasted for five weeks. In some of the bloodiest fighting of World War II, it's believed that all but 200 or so of the 21,000 Japanese forces on the island were killed, as were almost 7,000 Marines.

28,000 people dead in a battle between two will be strong allies?

How does that not describe an example of the evils that man can commit?

War is evil in and of itself. The fact that men from Japan were trying to butcher men from America anyway they know how, through gun, sword, knife, flame thrower, bomb, grenade, etc puts into context the pain, torment, and hell both sides went through. Looking at her, my guess is that she is either first generation, or second generation american. As a result, her context is that of the USA and of where her heritage is. She looks middle eastern. Given that, I looked her up. She is Libyan. She either fled Ghaddafi, or was there when Libya tore itself apart. She has probably seen war and the ramifications of was. She also attended Yale, so she is smart, and had an intro into liberalism is my guess. Taking that along with english as a second language, I don't think there is anything wrong with what she said. Sometimes you have to look at the context. As an example, if the city your living in decides to kill each other and over 7000 people die in a month, would you not consider that evil? Further, lets say it was during Jan 6th. On one side, lets say the "Rioters" started looting, burning and killing people. Is that evil? Or on the flip, lets say the police and national guard starting shooting "Rioters", mowing them down. Is that evil? The answer to it is yes, because in its context war is evil because its war, regardless of the politics at the end of the day one person is trying to take anothers life any way they can, and sometimes that results in alot of pain. That is evil. Doesn't matter what religion you are, murder is wrong, and war is nothing but industrial murder.

The US was repulsed by Japanese cruelty towards Allied PoWs and innocent civilians in China, Korea, the Philippines, and Burma, so the US Marines takeover of Iwo Jima was part of a longstanding round-the-clock effort by the US to thwart and end Japanese aggression in East Asia and the western Pacific. The reason Japan invaded Manchuria was to obtain resources for its growing population in order to mitigate the effects of the global depression on Japan, but Japanese aggression in East Asia was panned as a violation of the League of Nations charter, and only after the Japanese annexed Vietnam and attacked Pearl Harbor did the American people recognize that Japan had become an enemy of the US, and we Americans feel blessed that we stopped Japanese aggression in the East Asia-Pacific because the Japanese servicemen who flew the MXY7 Ohka suicide planes were as fanatical as members of al-Qaeda and ISIS.
