Green lasers are probably being used because they tend to travel farther through the atmosphere. The wattage being used is not that high... if it is
approaching the point where Rayleigh scattering makes the light beam visible, it's just barely reaching it. The beams are broken. More likely that is
reflection off pollution in the air, meaning it is operating below the Rayleigh threshold.
Anyway, if China did want to weaponize lasers, they'd use a red or infrared laser. Those are more efficient and much easier to produce. My guess is,
this is some sort of targeting system test; whether for scientific or military purposes, I dare not guess. Another possibility is an alternate
satellite communication system. We claim to have jammed their communication with the balloon, so maybe China wants something that is not so easily
jammed?
