The US has shot down an unknown object flying in its airspace, off the coastline of Alaska.

The object, shot down on the order of President Joe Biden, was flying at a high-altitude of about 40,000 feet and was the size of a small car, the White House said.

It posed a "reasonable threat" to the safety of civilian flights, said John Kirby, the White House National Security Council spokesman.

It was unclear where the object came from.

"We don't know who owns this object," said Mr Kirby.

The incident happened just days after the US downed a Chinese balloon believed to be a spy aircraft.

I wonder what it could be, maybe a spy drone?

It seems to me that the air currents are bringing the floating objects along the same trajectory.

It wasn't floating, it was flying, and it was on a totally different trajectory.

Other than that, you nailed it.

Perfect example of "Unintended Consequences":

One "spy" balloon is allowed to transit, after being judged by the military as non-threatening, and they get hell for it.

Now every balloon in the sky will be considered a harbinger of the Apocalypse and shot down with a vengeance.

It's called "Cover Your A$$"; AKA "Stupid Games for Stupid People".

On the (not so) positive side; we've just shown our opposition a cheap and effective way to tie up our air defense assets and expend valuable military resources for little more than the cost if a weather balloon and some helium!

Yep lets shot ET now out of the skies, after all everything flying in US airspace is tread to national security, China already got the intel they needed.

As far as I have seen on this. they are reporting that it was "hovering".

Interesting choice of words.

Also not another balloon as it was described on Sky news as being "the size of a small car". Which sort of rules out a baloon.

Also at 40K feet put in direct conflict with commercial aircraft, which is the reason they're giving as to why it was taken out. but so far they do not know who owns it or where it came from.

I'm not saying its Aliens.... but.

How do you know, were you the one who shot it down?

keep your eyes open and looking at the sky you might see more than a balloon

This government can't even shoot a balloon, how are they going to shoot a zero gravity high tech UFO?

Knowing our luck the object was either an alien pod containing the technological blueprints required for us to become a type one civilization, and now its been vaporized or-

Biden just started a war with a hostile alien species.

General said it was heading northeast, checking the winds over Alaska that seems would be impossible for a balloon
