Starred. We could all stand to follow your example. Myself especially.

Thank you for saying that. It is appreciated.

No, it's not a computer, it's a fancy freaking Tamagotchi/Walkie-talkie lovechild toy, just modernized.

Computers do heavy lifting processing. No phone, Apple or otherwise, can wrangle rendering, streaming (audio or otherwise) and any other 2-ton workhorse program a desktop or laptop can *simultaneously* handle. Complete with the necessary onboard guts to facilitate that feat.

This is like trying to convince me my handheld Tetris game is somehow the same as an Xbox. In intent & use? Yes, albeit very limited -- to one game. Beyond that, the similarities end, and it ain't no Xbox (but my Tetris handheld does still work!!)

A cell phone is no desktop/laptop computer.
edit on 1/29/2023 by Nyiah because: Tamagotchi's that keychain digipet I had, not Digimon.

What's a mobile phone ?

It's British for "cell phone."

Party of four comes in to the restaurant. As soon as they are seated, the phones come out.

My question, why even go out together if you aren't going to talk to each other? Just order delivery and be dicks in your own home, but taking the effort to go out and then not speak to anyone? Why bother?

I suppose the 5 IBM System/360's that NASA used for the Apollo 11 mission weren't computers either, because they could do none of the things you describe.

i am one of the hold outs who does not own a cell phone or text. my family is always on my case about it. what if their is an emergency? what if your car breaks down? i am 52 years old and i managed to survive without one. i see the addiction in people and the amount of time they waste on their phones. i see my son, nieces and nephews never talk on the phone only text. it is sad. a reply to: musicismagic

I totally agree with you. I'm in the exact same boat, only I'm older. Family and friends ask me that same question all the time. See, I'm a professional musician and am always coming home at 3 or 4 in the morning from somewhere after a gig. They say, "What if your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, how would you get help?" My reply is always, "I'm pretty sure that every person that passes by has a cell-phone. Help is right there."

They don't seem to have a response for that. But, I'm right - almost everybody has a mobile phone and there is always traffic passing by around here - day and night. You wouldn't believe the traffic.

And you know, there used to be this thing called "telephone booths." I used to use those when I was away from home. They were very helpful. Why did they disappear? It's almost like they're trying to force everybody to get a mobile phone into their lives. Why would they do something like that? For what purpose? I made it all those years without a mobile phone, and so did 99.99% of the rest of humanity. What changed?

we are a rare breed. most people do not believe i do not have one. sometimes i am tempted to cave only because my children only like to communicate in texts and i am always told we can talk more if i get a phone. but i see in the future, you probably wont be able to do a lot of things without a phone. Example.. i was ill and did my grocery shopping online. i went to pick it up and the sign said text #123 to let us know you have arrived. well i was stuck and had to knock on the door to get someone to help me get my groceries! a reply to: TrulyColorBlind

So true! An example of mine....
Up until October 2021, I had been a 30-year customer at Kroger grocery stores. I went in to shop there on that October 2021 date and they had a dozen eggs for $1.29. But, right next to them and the same brand, they had a dozen and a half eggs for .99 cents, it was a special sale. When I checked out with the .99 cent eggs, they said I had to use my cell-phone to get the sale price. Not having a cell-phone, I asked how could I get the sale price? They said I couldn't. I told them I had been a 30-year customer but that didn't matter to them. All that mattered was I had to have a cell-phone. If they had a sale price on eggs, why didn't they just mark them down and let everybody just buy them on sale without needing to do anything else? I'll bet the workers there had no clue about why using cell-phones had become mandantory. The orders come from on high and the little people have no clue and just have to do what they're told. They need to stop being so clueless.

It's obvious what they're doing. Needless to say, I stopped shopping at Krogers and haven't been back since October 2021.

Why is that? That's the stupidest way to communicate when there are literally better and faster ways. I have literally seen people take 15 minutes to text back and forth with somebody, only to say something simple like, "Yes, I'll be home soon." Ridiculous!

What's more ridiculous, people are buying into it!
