I was so close when It all ended. So close yet nothing achieved. Then I remembered what grandpa said; its the journey. Yet he didn't know it was the
salvation of ours and I gave everything.
Exiting the building with all of my work inside really hurt. Yes maybe I was better in it now but years of work is now not mine and dismissed... Yes I
went to places where no humans gone, seen things that are impossible to put into words leaving me a more grown man and now I am supposed to go to my
apartment with nothing in it and sip my coffee, replay all of it in my mind and be okay wondering what my babies are doing till the end of my life?
No. I had to do something about it.
Just as I was trying to find a way to steal the data back, all ground shook with a big explosion on the floor where I left them. I stumbled and fell
down. Car alarms everywhere. Glass was raining. Covering my face I ran to the other side of the street. Now all the work was "gone" gone. Then I felt
someone's arms under my shoulders and when I looked up, two well dressed men was lifting me. Just as I was about to thank them I realized I was being
taken to a car ten meters away. Well, why would I fight back? The meaning of my life was already gone and one more adventure wouldn't hurt. At least
for now.
Thrown to the back seat, another guy inside put a bag on my head and the car quickly started speeding. I was silent. They were just holding me but no
force being used. Maybe an agency was after my work? Maybe they destroyed it and now going to kill the last remaining guy who knows about it? It would
be a meaningful end to a meaningful chase after all because I know I wouldn't be able to do it myself. Always appreciate a professional and let them
do their job for you, right?
We stopped after five to ten minutes, couldn't really tell. Taken from the car with the bag on my face, we stepped into a cold building, colder then
outside which is winter. From the echo It was a long hallway with no carpets. Then we got into an elevator. I assume we were four people in it and one
of them said "No sudden moves, now you are going to meet him." with a pretty young voice. I just nodded my head. After the elevator we walked like a
minute and then stopped, a door opened and we went in. I could smell the heavy tobacco.
They removed the bag and commanded me to sit one of the leather seats next to a pretty discreet work desk. There was a man sitting, with a cigar and a
little notebook. His eyes were electric blue and had white beard and a chubby belly under it.
"Finally." he said. Looking at my eyes and keeping quiet. I asked;
"Who are you?"
"I am the man" he said.
"What man?"
"The man who will give you everything you wanted."
"How do you know what I want?"
"Because It was me who you were working for. I just had to make sure no one saw your work but you and me. I have a copy here." Shows me a flash disk.
Was I dreaming after the shock of the explosion? Or was it the end and now I would be able to see
my kids? He said;
"Sadly I can't guarantee your trip back, but if you can reach don't ever contact anybody from your work
or past life." Slips me a card and a passport. It was an ID with my photo on it with a different name.
"This is the new you. Come up with a believable past on the road. My guys will take you to the airport. Thanks for the work. The world will be a
different place now and I will get to see my family too." He kept looking at me with eyes watering.
And just like that, everything changed again in matter of twenty minutes, from hope to hopelessness, from shock to being helpless but not giving a
damn, then this. I guess I succeeded.
The End
