arstechnica.com...

Federal prosecutors have charged two men with allegedly taking part in a spree of swatting attacks against more than a dozen owners of compromised Ring home security cameras and using that access to livestream the police response on social media.

More dangerous shenanigans. Had to share with you all

the men placed hoax emergency calls to the local police departments of each owner that were intended to draw an armed response, a crime known as swatting.

So these guys hack Ring doorbells, call the cops and act like they're a child calling because the parents are drinking, arguing, and shooting a gun off in the house.
When the police arrive they taunt the cops, in a way I'm guessing is threatening with gun shots, which in turn causes the police to respond in a felony take down, "swat style," all the while live streaming it on social media.
So we have innocent people just sitting in their homes when all of a sudden the door is kicked in or S.W.A.T. arrives.
Wow.

Prosecutors alleged that the two men and a third unnamed accomplice would first obtain the login credentials of Yahoo accounts and then determine if each account owner had a Ring account that could control a doorbell camera. The men would then use their access to gather the names and other information of the account holders. The defendants then placed the hoax emergency calls and waited for armed officers to respond.

All this through hacked emails. 🤦🏻‍♂️ More to look out for, I guess. Could you imagine relaxing on your couch when you hear your front door kicked in and cops taking down you and your loved ones? This is diabolical. Evil is on full-tilt.

the sentences they are looking at are way too small.

“one count of conspiracy to intentionally access computers without authorization. Nelson was also charged with two counts of intentionally accessing without authorization a computer and two counts of aggravated identity theft. If convicted, both men face a maximum penalty of five years in prison.”

They should be facing 18 counts of attempted murder minimum.

I also fault dumb-ass law enforcement for responding like this to what is effectively anonymously provided information. Swatting has become an almost common problem, but these overly militarized, hopped-up, trigger happy idiots keep falling for it.

The cops involved need to be prosecuted along with the anal orifices who made the calls.

In the article is says the men hacked ring ring systems then would spectate the cameras to gather information like names of the people involved and their children. They would then impersonate the childen and call the police while pretending to be the child.

These two went well beyond the typical swat call and I don’t see officers at fault at least with these two. They were calculated and sick to the max.

Sure some swat cases are outright silly but this one goes way farther then most.

Definitely agree about the hopped up militarized police that often happens I just don’t see it with this particular case.

Swatting should be at least a class B felony. Better if class A. People have been seriously injured or killed from this BS.

This is especially creepy, though. Being spied on through a doorbell system with camera that they can then watch everything going on. There is something fundamentally wrong with these people.

I agree, False reporting/allegations have been taken way too lightly and now this is the result.

These people absolutely created a situation to that had a high probability of killing or seriously injuring someone. It's not a kid pulling a fire alarm to get out of class. They also should be personally sued

I don't think felonies at the federal level are classified in such a way.
They have just a checklist of criteria for prison placement and sentencing guidelines. Sentences are put in place by the DOJ and Congress.

The truth is that drug offenders are the prison system's bread and butter, that revolving door cannot be hundred by some guy calling in silly swats lol.
