Sad for Uruguay. I must have watched that goal 20 times, I'm not sure Ronaldo touched it. Also, I saw better acting than in most movies... the way CR7 went down shortly after he "scored", and many of his teammates. And never was that a penalty at the end!

Nice to see this thread, caught it to late
So far I really enjoyed all matches and surprising wins and losses.

I'm cheering for the Dutch team , I'm skeptical about them so far but they've got potential but it seems they've got to find the desert rhythm to really shine

Good for you.

Lots of upsets.

Gotta support underdogs.

Except Wales, obviously.

True, the real spirit and strength will be the team with a high moral and that's connected to most and finds their players in game continuously , and surprisingly the underdogs could sometimes reach unknown and astounding levels of play

It's a game of two halves.

I must admit to preferring Rugby.

A game played by gentlemen with oddly shaped balls?

Gentlemen?
Nearly every single rugby player of any sort of half decent standard I've ever met has been mad as the proverbial hatter in one way or another!

Yep, I knew it. From The Guardian live feed:

Fifa has confirmed that its whizzy matchball technology proved conclusively that Cristiano Ronaldo did not touch Bruno Fernandes’ cross – and eventual goal – when Portugal took a 1-0 lead over Uruguay. Had it been awarded to Ronaldo it would have been another landmark moment for the striker, putting him level with Eusebio on nine Portugal goals at World Cups. But, nope. Here’s what Fifa told ESPN:

In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball Technology housed in Adidas’s Al Rihla Official Match Ball, we are able to definitively show no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the opening goal in the game. No external force on the ball could be measured as shown by the lack of ‘heartbeat’ in our measurements. The 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball allows us to be highly accurate in our analysis.

Perhaps if it hadn’t been a “flyaway”, Ronaldo would be level with Eusebio.

By "flyaway" they mean this: www.theguardian.com...

And here's the Fifa source via ESPN: www.espn.co.uk...

He must have known he didn't touch it but still he claimed the goal.

What a git.

Well , it was clear to me the moment when the goal came anyone could see that touching hair/balls isn't really a clear goal.
But they won so nothing to complain for Portugal so far.

We did our job to today, but not a convincing match I think next match will be our wakeup call for sure ...

Ah! found the World Cup thread. Interesting comments.
I'm kind of an average american boomer that has difficulty with a sport that routinely ends their matches in 0-0 draw after 90+ minutes. Oddly enough I enjoy watching kids play much more so than the elites. I have had my share of standing in the cold rain while watching my children play.

A question remotely related to this thread...perhaps it doesn't fit here. How do football fans from 3rd world countries afford to fly to Qatar and stay for a week or two? Do they save up over 4 years? I know I would have to. And the stands are quite full of them. I've asked my fellow workmates at the office...no one has an answer. The GDP of Senegal isn't that high...where are they getting the funding? I don't begrudge them the opportunity; they appear to be enjoying themselves.
I must be an ugly american that is projecting my stereotypes on to the world.

Some of those fans will be migrant workers based in Qatar and other Arabian countries etc.
But....not everyone in Africa is starving to death, many countries are undergoing modernisation programmes.

Getting a bit nervy about tonight.
I was going to watch it in the pub but its too bloody cold and I can't be arsed to get ready......I'm getting old and boring!
