Llandegley is a small village in mid Wales that boasts a population of around 400 people , one evening in 2002 a group of friends decided it would be amusing to give Llandegley its own International Airport ... or rather a sign directing people to Llandegley's International Airport , the sign has become a source of amusement for locals and tourists alike but 20 years later the end has come for Llandegley International to be closed down and the sign that has cost 25k to maintain over the last 20 years to be removed , but its legend will live on.

Since 2002, if you travel eastwards along the A44 between Rhayader and Kington, you will see a sign directing drivers to Terminals 1 and 3 of Llandegley International airport.

But drive the two-and-a-half miles, as instructed, and you will end up not at an airport - not even an airfield - but just a field, on the outskirts of the village of Llandegley, Powys.

Llandegley International Airport Facebook post from earlier this year.

Right, we've had enough of this. This is the third time a Russian-registered private jet has landed without authority at Llandegley. On this occasion, the pilot parked broadside on the taxiway and the occupants disembarked, each one carrying a fold-up bicycle. They evaded customs and reportedly pedalled westwards in the direction of Crossgates.

These jets will be impounded, auctioned off and the proceeds donated to Ukrainian charities.

Note to oligarchs' aircrew: If you want to donate your bosses' private jets to good causes, please give us a ring first and let us know. Don't just park it and run away.

I see the joke but, over £1000 a year to maintain a sign that doesn't even have an arrow on it to show direction?

If its just a field, how is there a plane on a taxiway?

Why was it not intercepted by the RAF?

If these people just got off the plane and rode off on bikes, avoiding customs, where are they now and what were they carrying? e.g. Novichok

Such a weird story

.

There are so many disused/closed RAF bases around the country that it’s almost impossible to keep up. I actually live on one.

A few of them have since become major airports too. There are also many private smaller airfields around the country, even if they just fly gliders. It wouldn’t be too difficult then to believe any sign you saw that showed an airport nearby.

Some days there could be a whole lot of gander landing at the airport I suppose.
