“Maria Ponomarenko’s sentence shows that in Russia telling the truth, denouncing a war crime and demanding justice for the killing of civilians, has itself become a grave offence punishable by many years in prison. Her sentence is yet another example of injustice and the cynicism of the authorities in Russia, which are disturbingly routine. The authorities are trying to lock up all those who disagree with them and intimidate others to stay silent and look the other way rather than risk years behind bars.”
On 15 February, Leninsky District Court of Barnaul, Altay Kray, sentenced Maria Ponomarenko, a journalist with RusNews online media, to six years in a penal colony after finding her guilty of disseminating “knowingly false information” about the Russian Armed Forces, a new “crime” recently introduced as Article 207.3 to the Russian Criminal Code. She had been held in pre-trial detention since 24 April 2022.
In addition, she is prohibited from engaging in journalistic activities for five years after serving her sentence. The prosecution asked the court to sentence her to nine years in prison for posting a publication in the “Tsenzury net” (No Censorship) Telegram-channel. In it she wrote about the deaths of civilians hiding in a theatre in Mariupol after it was hit by a Russian airstrike. Twelve of those who died in the attack were identified by Amnesty International in a detailed report published in June 2022.

Russia only has themselves to blame to open wide this door of "war of attrition" as that is what the US and others are involved with. Russia literary handed this opportunity with a big red bow where there is no victory for them and the US/EU is bleeding them dry one tank and one solider at a time until they say I give, or Putin is removed as the scapegoat.

One of the "true" primary reasons for this war was because of the fear of NATO expansionism. And Putins dream of reconstituting the Soviet Empire of old.

“The Russians next to Bakhmut are trying to rely more on manpower than on armoured vehicles,” said Serhiy Cherevaty, Ukraine’s military spokesperson for the eastern command. He told Ukraine’s Telemarathon on Sunday that the Russians were using small tactical groups to approach Ukrainian troops and try to engage them in close-combat battles, not risking their heavy equipment in the current weather conditions and Ukraine’s ability to target it.
The fight to control Bakhmut began in June and has become one of the war’s bloodiest battles, with Russia concentrating a huge number of resources on capturing the town."

It's been a tough battle for Bakhmut and the last I heard the Russians had taken about 4 or 5 blocks of a residential area in the east of the city. Even if Russia were to take Bakhmut, it would be a pyrrhic victory at this point after the heavy losses they have already sustained.
The Wagner group seems to have been leading the advances in the Bakhmut area before now. They had a supply of prisoners to use as cannon fodder to lose in probing attacks to identify the Ukrainian defensive positions, then they could use the more experienced Wagner troops to attack those positions once identified. They were more successful than the regular Russian army because of not having the same bureaucracy and could make more effective and flexible command decisions on the fly, and apparently were getting plenty of weapons diverted from the regular Russian army.
But according to a recent speech by Wagner's leader Prigozhin, they no longer recruit soldiers and they are not getting the ammo they once did. So Denys Davydov on youtube thinks the major force that was once Wagner is withering from lack of supplies of prisoners and weapons/ammo. Maybe Putin was worried Prigozhin was getting too powerful, and that's why he stopped the flow of weapons to Wagner? He discusses that possibility in this update:
Denys was worried about Bakhmut falling too, and while it still might fall to the Russians, he thinks Ukraine has a better chance of holding it against the less competent regular Russian army now since Wagner appears to be faltering from lack of manpower and ammo. I don't know how many Russians have died in the battle for Bakhmut but I'm sure it's a lot...more than the Ukrainians lost in the same battles.
Denys also says Putin is under increasing pressure internally from Russian elites to end the war, but I don't see how Putin could do that at this point and stay in power, even if he wanted to end the war. Apparently increasing numbers of Russian elites want the war to end, according to intelligence sources.
A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

Ukraine has released extraordinary video footage that appears to show Russian fighters dragging their badly wounded commander away from the battlefield, and then beating him violently with what appear to be shovels.
