Hi all this is my first post here, I do read a fair bit from the site daily.
Just wondering if anyone has looked into the soylent company. I watched soylent green today but decided to watch it as if it was a documentary and it shocked me to the core, especially since the setting year is 2022 and the big push for assisted dying.

I've also been looking into the predictive programming stuff lately so that's why I tried to watch it with a less entertainment and more messaging lens.
Then I remembered there is a company literally called Soylent making food products, and they even reference Soylent Green and released a limited range of Soylent Green with a quote from thorn!

I accept the possibility it could just be as they say a homage, but from a business perspective it seems very foolish to set up a company linked to the types of topics soylent green explores as you will constantly have to be defending your brand from these types of links. Although on the flipside it could have been a clever trick to get some publicity and controversy out of it.

Just wondering if anyone here has really looked into the whole thing.
Cheers.

From their website:

From The Beginning
Our founders named the product Soylent, in homage to the novel Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison. It’s a dystopian sci-fi novel that explores population growth and world resources. (Yes, we know that there is a Hollywood movie that is an adaptation of the book that involves people. See below.)

Soylent company website

In the book Soylent was lentil and soy steaks and not people.

I'll eat soybeans and lentils sometimes, but I am not eating a soy lentil steak.

After reading the summary of the book it looks miles better than the silly movie. I may give it a quick read now. The name as well actually makes sense now.

Soylent. Soy and lentil.

Not the worst thing in the world. Their product doesn't contain any human DNA.

This on the other hand should be a point of concern.
From: gizmodo.com dated 11/08/12

In 2011, scientists in Beijing reported on a method of creating large amounts of gelatin by inserting human DNA fragments into yeast. Human DNA-derived gelatin has actually been in use for a while, in vaccine preparation and the gel caps that many over the counter drugs come in. This method created such large quantities of gelatin that it would be practical to use it for more common consumer goods like candy and baking supplies.

So, a drink that pays homage to a classic documentary isn't as bad as a gummy-bear made from grandma.

Yes there is a time coming when people will eat people. Look at the moral values now. Food will become scarce. Remember the Donner party. There will be famine

It was a pretty good book. Much better than the movie. I think that I will read it again.

Sorry, but I've seen how most people take care of themselves and the things they eat or use. No thanks, I will pass. Imagine how sick eating tweakers and heroin addicts would make you. Or someone who lives on fast food?

Not to worry. There wont be any heroin or fast food. Just lean red meat. Dig in!

I don't see any reason why I will need to eat people. Unless of course there are literally no other food sources left on Earth.

Yep, I agree.

When half the nation, even in their political ads
has declared the absolute NECESSITY of
HEALTHY "birthing people"
(mother is now a forbidden word to them as transphobic)
being able to abort (kill)
full term 40 week old HEALTHY fetuses
as extraordinarily important in order to keep
abortion throughout pregnancy legal.
We have reached soylent green as the next step.

When half the nation has declared that
biological women are "chest feeders' and "birthing people"
who have no right to bodily privacy (as a liberal judge did)
but transgender women with a penis do
have a right to bodily privacy. www.forbes.com... ?sh=58ac04e62d54

We are closer than ever to biological cow like human breeders
(since the word mother is now considered unacceptable)
who have no rights to their bodies except to produce
fetuses to kill.

We have reached soylent green as the next step.

All thanks to, well, you know who bathed in red,
fists lifted in rage and hate,
giving a speech on unity a few days ago
and his political party
who feel abortion even if the
human breeder is healthy and the lump of tissue healthy
at full term, one minute before birth,
the lump of tissue should be killed at will
if the healthy breeder wants to.

Yes, the term breeder is being used to describe
heterosexuals especially biological women.
In the liberal, left leaning. progressive LGBT movement.

Tamusan is talking about the book Make Room! Make Room! on which the movie is very loosely based on.

A riot breaks out after a nearby food shop has a surprise sale on "soylent" (soy and lentil) steaks.
