The recent hot topic in Russian Defense Industry is Integration to highly increase the state funding on R&D(as it was during the soviet times ) .The Defense ministry has decided to "integrate" major aircraft firms throughout Russia ,moreover there are other reasons which will favor the merger between Mig and Sukhoi

1 The major Sukhoi stock holders are dissatisfied with the Sukhoi head for his decisions concerning collaboration with Iranian, Indian and Malayan enterprises and the complex politics in a complex way favors the merger.

2 On the other hand the Mig after loosing tender for the 5th Gen aircraft has a shabby future

3 the Mig and Sukhoi are working together in the PAK-FS

4 The state Duma (lower parliament) members are dissatisfied with the FOREIGN collaboration (India & Iran)and prefers the merger plan instead of foreign collaboration to raise funds .

5 The Russian Defense ministry has recently decreased the time limit up to 2007 for the development of PAK-FS just “collaboration” between the two firms wont help to complete the project in such a short time .

6 The Russian defense ministry is thinking about 6th Gen aircraft to be developed before 2012 by the merger of Mig Sukhoi Energia(space industry)and other small firms .

The merged industry is likely to use the trade name " Sukhoi" and will also produce state-of-art Transport planes, Agricultural planes and Advanced trainers

There is no doubt that the proposed merger will soon take place...the big question is WHEN?

We are soon going to have the same Soviet Union as far as defense is concerned............... The heads CIS countries headed by Putin have decided to jointly invest on R&D
This programme along with the Integration programme is going to provide Russia more than enough funding maintain her position as one of the leaders in Defense and Space Industry .

I don't think simply integrating programs and allying with India as going to give Russia all the $$$ they need to produce their systems need for such position as you have stared. I'm not sure but I thin the Russian military budget is about 50B a year.

WestPoint we can never predict what's going to happen in future we can just hope for a better future emphasizing upon the situation today

Russian Government doesn’t officially publish their defense budget all we see in different websites are estimates
Still if the estimates are taken into consideration then Russia stands next to US in terms of Defense spending(much above China )
however this 2nd highest defense spending of Russia is nothing in comparison to the defense spending of US......
still today we see that the Russian Fighter Aircraft INDUSTRY is performing much much better than expected

In early September 1997, Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev revealed that Russia simultaneously develops six new generation fighter aircraft. This means that MAPO MIG and ANTK Sukhoi proceed with more development programmes than Europe (Rafale, Eurofighter and Gripen) and US (F-22 and JSF) together. Also these projects are 10- 15 % ahead of the rest of the world .
Here is the SOURCE
If this "under funded" Russian aircraft Industry can be well ahead of the rest of the world in R&D ....then we can always expect Russian Defense Industry to be at its full colours after Integration and highly increased Government funding

NB I never said that future Russian aircraft Industry is going to "ally with India " rather this integration programme has been developed to prevent collaboration with other foreign countries like India Iran and Malaysia

There is a joke out here in Russia about research spending:
Both Russia and USA were developing their space projects for the same mission , the spacecraft maintained a higher-than-normal temperature ...normal pens will melt at that temperature
So the US team spent 10 billion dollars and after long research successfully developed a heat stable Ink Pen.
The Russians started using Pencil instead.

Ahh... so in 1997 they were 15-20% ahead of the rest of the world with the 5th generation jet production? Yet its 2005 and the U.S. will have 16 operational F/A-22's in December and how many 5th generation aircraft do the Russians have? Also the Russinas dont have a 5th generation jet yet they are trying to develop a 6th generation?

And that makes a lot of sense for a country that doesn't have the money to build fund ONE project by it's self

10-15 % ahead of the US? LMFAO!!!!!! Have you seen their last 2 technology demonstrators? The S-37 and Mig-1.44? They are CLEARLY behind what the US produced A DECADE before they came out (Y/F-22, Y/F-23).

This is an absolute joke that they were at any point in the last 30 years ahead of the US in the aviation industry.

They aren't

A lot more givernment funding would do wonders to help Russia catch up with the US. Their problem has never been they lack the scientists, it has always been lack of funding and computing technology.

As has been proven many times on this site, the US never spent billions to develope the space pen, it was - if I remember correctly - actually a private invention.

And the reason that the US would NOT use a pencil is overlooked by your typically safety blind government and scientists. The REASON we didn't use pencils is because if bits of lead broke off, they could float into the computers. Needless to say, you want as few computer problems in space as you can.

Also, there is a joke over here in the US about research spending:

Why pay a bunch of mathmaticians to simplify German formulas for radar return signals when you can just get it for free from the Russians because they were too stupid to realise it could be used to make stealth aircraft.

The U.S. has been working in 5th generation since the early 80s haha. Shoot, we'll be on 6th Generation non-manned by the time the Russians get done janking outdated US technology.

_ Ha, Ha 10-15 percent. Ha this really Fun - 20 -25 % is more rightly .

Hm, yuo have some problem? well , becourse, I don't see nothing problem

Yes, lets try this one, one more time shall we?

In 2001, it was over 2.3 Trillion a year. Hey hey, malinformed are we?

Anyways, believe it or not, Russia was ahead of the US, for A TIME!

The U.S. sped right by the soviet union when it colapsed, so you all know what happened? Those advanced 5th gen projects, got held off until now, when funding became available. The U.S. however, already has operational 5th gen Stealth fighters.

Russia has a quite a bit to catch up to the U.S.

Not a big deal to me. In the US, Lockheed, Boeing, basically work toghether on virtually every aircraft project. That despite that fact that they compete against eachother for aircraft contracts.
