Here’s one for you all to ponder over.
What could this be?
It was infront of the front left hazard avoidance cam.

Is it something that came off the rover?
Is Mars already littered enough by us that past mission trash is blowing around the planet and ending up in rover images?

Is it… organic?
It looks like a ball of loose string to me.

My first impression was organic... like some type of weed (perhaps)? (Pareidolia - Mine).

It's cool though, and I can see how some wound up yarn or string could fit in that X-Category too.

edit on 7/13/2022 by JohnnyAnonymous because: I misspelled "Pareidolia"... Sometimes I type faster than my brain can keep up and I make mistakes. Come to think about it, I miss steaks in whole as the price is so darn expensive. WOW, I bet you never tho0ught that you'd be reading so much of my 'edit post'. Are you that bored.. really?

A similar looking thing they posited was some of the wiring sheath, but I thought it was some kind of metallic sheath not fabric. Perhaps there was fabric under the metal sheath and now that the metal sheath is damaged and the fabric is getting removed?

It looks somewhat similar to fire retardant materials I've seen used for engine compartment tubing. I take that back, I'm specifically thinking of a woven fiber gasket from wood stoves, but similar. Heat resistant.

Yeah : we sometimes see the things we desire.

Don't worry : Saturday night is just around the corner...

( Just-teasing. Hi-hi-hi.)

If it is from us : then perhaps some kind of shaving from the sheath of a cable, or hydraulic tube ??

On Mars : would the shaving from, say a black plastic cable sheath, stay black for long, or would the plastic quickly loose it's coloring ?

Looks freshly deposited above the windblown sand, so logic dictates that this is unfortunately just some string that came off the rover.

I hope we get an explanation as to what it is.

At first glance it had me thinking along the same lines as Johnny mentioned, some sort of weed or root system.
But when I zoomed in closer, it seemed to fibrous to me, so I figured some sort of string.
Or maybe bunched up paracord that finally came loose?

The official explanation thus far is some debris from its landing.

And they used the example of the thermal blanket that was spotted in a photo not long ago - then that piece of thermal blanket was missing from a photo taken shortly after.
Meaning the winds on Mars is carrying around garbage and were photographing it.

That "string"certainly doesn't look like anything else I have seen on Mars.
I hope that if NASA don't think its from the rover they could maybe try to snag a bit of it into one of their sample tubes for later examination.

The "rock" on the left of the pic looks like a chunk of petrified wood-you can see what looks like tree rings and it even appears to have the remains of a small branch on the right hand side.

Probably just a rock though I know
