The green lawns are not much compared to high water use farming for profit

looking for more water from the people who live hear and not from the company's that use it for $$$ shipping the products away from hear

Bet nestle is still pumping out bottles of water California almonds still growing and that iceberg still coming from az ... Wouldn't want to you know fix the problem tho that would be bad for business

Amen Amen Amen, tell it like it is!

This is like places not giving out drinking straws because of environmental concerns, while ships, trucks and trains are polluting a millions x more every single day. Not that i’m against lowering the use of straws, but they are a tiny drop in the bucket compared to what is really polluting.

I think we also have to remember that there are entire industries and educational programs designed on turf care and upkeep that many people find interesting and relaxing.

For many people having a lawn Is their hobby, it is what they enjoy and they like to take pride. What they perceive and others perceive to be a "nice" lawn may vary based on people's opinions but it is a very real thing.

I know my retired neighbor used to spend hours in his yard and is something he enjoyed and it was his hobby, and it looked nice. The new occupants don't feel the same way and all the progress he made is basically gone now. He liked the science behind it and liked the challenge and took pride in his home. The new owners have different priorities.

I guess if laws are passed banning lawns or being available at an extra cost etc people will need to make a decision on what they want to do.

. . . residents of drier regions would plant less thirsty native species, like cactus in the desert.

I live in the desert. There are lots of rock gardens instead of grass.

There has been a push for quite some time to use native plants.

Commercial properties have "water catch" areas. Grass areas are dug down into a 'bowl' shape (not flat lawns).

As far as the heat goes -- like any place you acclimate. I rarely think about the heat until it gets past 115 degrees.

During high heat -- outside workers do split 'early morning/late afternoon' shifts.

The thing with the straws is their shape. While other non-biodegradable plastics can be easily scooped up -- the straws, because of their shape-- fall out of the bins.

So, its not that plastic straws are more important -- they're equally important -- but difficult to 'capture'.

They can come take mine. I messed up huge this year.

I saw a few homes on our street putting up signs saying don’t mind the lawn, we’re feeding the bees.
And they let their lawns run wild for a few months.
Well last weekend I figured I did my part and chopped her down.
It took 2 passes with the lawn mower to bring it down.
Then a raking of the 2 foot high weeds.
And I’ll be cutting it again this weekend to clean up the strays.
But my lord did I get a lot of weeds.
Some nice wild flowers were in the mix, but mainly weeds.

I don’t think a lot of people will be repeating the no mow may.

If you want to really help pollinators plant natives, don’t use pesticides, keep your lawn and gardens healthy.

W-ell... Your "american tradition" is far older than your country, haha

The complete History of Lawns (Illustrated)

If I owned a house, I'd let moss grow on the ground, under a few trees, instead of grass. It's not as much care, and it feels like walking on a carpet. This would be the best of the best.

And I'd have a garden, too, using a technique I saw used by a ver old japanes gardener in a documentary.

He said after a lifetime of gardening, becoming a renowned master (but I forgot the name), he finally undersood how to do it correctly.
He said look how nature is luxurious, and no one take carte of it.
So he showed a handfull of lots of different types of grains, all mixed loosely together. And he just threw them on the ground.

He proceeded to show his garden, and it was incredible. Like he said, some plants generate something another plant will need, and vice versa.
By letting them all grow together, they cared for each other on their own, like in nature.
I know I had never seen such enormous sunflower like he had...

So, no grass for me.

Make Moss Great Again! Or for Once!

It's not silly that they are 'going after' this, it's sad. It IS silly that it's even a thing to go after. What's the matter with people? I believe in the fact that earth's environment goes in cycles and it's mostly out of our control. However, I do believe we are stripping the earth of it's natural resources for reasons that have absolutely NOTHING to do with survival. Am I guilty of any contributions to that? Of course, as are most of us. I try to reduce my personal footprint the best I can but I know I fail.... a lot. But I will keep trying.

The point is, there is a happy medium and it's too bad that the A**holes have to get involved. We should take care of the only planet we have out of respect and self preservation for mankind and all that is indigenous to our ONLY INHABITABLE PLANET. That's all. We can kill each other, there will be more people. We kill the planet by depleting all of it and our life sustaining resources, well then, only the cockroaches will survive.

Our neighbor put in patches of high quality artificial turf throughout his front yard accompanied by a drought tolerant landscape, and it really does look Great ! I’m a plant person , but this works and looks/feels very natural !

So what kind of maintenance does artificial turf need? Maybe just vacuumed it occasionally? At least there are no 2 stroke powered vacuums (that I know of).

Amazingly you just rake it like regular grass, water drains through it, and after a year + it still looks great. It does seem that proper installation makes a big difference, anchoring the edges in some way, to soften and give a natural look. It’s becoming more popular here, when done well, it’s a wonderful alternative to lawns, especially in smaller spaces.

Is it silly? Well, yes, if we're already willing to agree that trying to force-terraform somewhere like California is a futile waste of locally finite natural resources (I swear you & I touched on that & agreed once, unless I got the wrong person)

Considering that, it's not much of a stretch to go, "Yeah, grass in Desert Town, California is a pretty retarded water-waste venture." And if we're being honest about that terraforming aim being laughable, then who takes the heat for it?
The citizens, duh. They're the ones who seem to think terraforming non-native grass into the environment somewhere that gets a few inches of rain annually at best is a goid call.
Gotta have that emerald yard, amirite?

The Biggest Problem that i see around here is way too many New Houses being Built.
When i was a younger man there were Trees every where we went.
Now it's wide open space with Cracker Box Homes Costing in the neighborhood of $300,000.
Trees are gone grass and weed pollen is terrible.
Over Population is getting worse every year.

a reply to: JAGStorm

I could say the exact same thing but change $300,000 to 3 million average. They strip an ancient forest bare to the rock and then ship in tons of top soil and turf for the mansions to be packed into neighborhoods like sardines in a can. Full of a bunch of idiots that cannot do anything for themselves except to hire someone else to do it.

De-population dont seem so bad if it gets down to survival of the fittest, Ive got a Tudor estate in mind I`m annexing once whatever crotch pox spreads next.

I like having a nice lawn, in the south it rains enough where there’s no need to water it. On that note, looking at the water levels out west, I believe a lawn is a complete waste of water/resource. Flying over Phoenix and seeing those houses with huge lawns and golf courses with green grass makes me shudder when seeing the reservoirs extremely low. Makes no sense.

Your not kidding. Wasting tons of water resources for grass is just stupid.

My yard looks like some natural field in the wild. Mix of grasses weeds flowers.
No one on the street cares if I cut it or not as well. Plus it rains here enough so I never have to water my lawn.

My landlords lawn , I rent. But my ll doesn't care what I do to the lawn.
So I put in two gardens. One in front one in back. 8)

There are problems in some regions with people using non native grass on their lawns. It looks wonderful and is easy to cut... But it uses significantly more water than native varieties and goes brown at the slightest reduction in watering.

In a time where water resources are stretch something needs to give, and I'd prefer it to be my neighbors ridiculous status lawn than my ability to take a shower or to flush my toilet.

Water restrictions are no joke, when you can't take a shower and do your laundry on the same day because of rationing you will soon see how unnecessary a green lawn can be.
