This is literally a law that criminalizes a gay person from living their life openly. That's pretty much the definition of persecution. Can you point to any similar laws in any country that makes it illegal for you to openly hate gay people?

It says "popularizes" or "imposes" which is kind of what we are seeing with the rise of trans extremism in the form of allowing children to transition with hormones or surgery at an age where cross dressing should be sufficient in case they have a change of heart.

Also it says, "does not aim to “prohibit or officially condemn non-traditional sexual relations” so my take of it is people are free and protected to be themselves but cannot endorse it publicly in the media, government.

I'm bisexual (how last century!) but it seems reasonable to me if I'm reading it right. It would stop the promoting to children but still allow discussion in a matter of fact manner. It seems written with media in mind more than an individual's opinion.

Hopefully Russia doens't allow trans women in women's sports as that is to my mind absolutely misogynist. I feel for those women and girls, after putting their heart and soul into training, only to get beat out by a biological male at a time in history where the notion that these He-ladies deserve such rights. Really should be the right to wear a frock, make up and heels not the right to outman a woman.

I don't care if someone is trans but I'm pissed as hell that women have fought so long for equal rights, including the right to participate in sports, only to be shut down again by men in female disguise with the blessing of all sports committees. I don't even like sports and it pisses me off. If a man wants to become a woman part of the learning should be that women historically have suffered massive inequality, and they should respect this and not need to compete, as it makes a mockery.

Ok, that's nothing to do with Russia but I'm all for shutting this nonsense down. Has anyone seen the pictures of botched transition surgeries or wondered why there is such a high rate of suicide among young trans people?

So a monument to Steve Jobs is intruding on your life or an online support group for homosexual teens?

Once again, the law that's been currently in place since 2013 criminalizes "promoting" non-traditional relationships to minors. The new amendment would criminalize "promoting" non-traditional relationships to anyone.

Under the current law people have been convicted for writing an article about a gay man that had been attacked by Right-Wing extremists, hosting a support group for homosexual teens, and standing outside holding a sign. Not to mention removing a monument to the further CEO of Apple because the current CEO said he's proud to be gay.

So it's clear, under the current law, this isn't just targeting the media and it has nothing to do with stopping propaganda. And now they want to expand what kind of "promotion" can be prosecuted.

People are already being persecuted under the current law. Why do you think expanding the law will lessen that persecution?

Wow... Russia is passing a law for Russians! Less than 3 hours since the OP was posted, and already there are 8 flags and 23 replies! Oh, the humanity! Why can't they just let people live the way they want? Oh wait... why can't we just let them live the way they want?

in the meantime, in other news... in Saudi Arabia that will get one killed. Not fined... executed.

a reply to: Sookiechacha

But in Saudi Arabia everything's fine...

Full disclosure: I have no problem with people being gay, joining for life with who they want, establishing a household with who they want, expressing affection for who they want (with some concern for decency)... but I do not like that lifestyle being forced into my home and taught to my kids. I never will. If I meet someone, I say something like, "Hi! I'm Redneck. Nice to meet you." I do not say, "Hi! I'm Redneck and I like women," nor do I say, "Hi! I'm Redneck and I like women. If you do too, nice to meet you; if not, go kill yourself, you hater!"

But somehow it is perfectly acceptable for someone who is gay to say, "Hi! I'm _____ and I'm gay. If you are too, nice to meet you; if not, go kill yourself, you hater!"

(Yeah, I know, not everyone who is gay is like that (actually the vast majority aren't). But some are. I've met them; I always just walk away. They aren't worth the energy it would take to punch them in the jaw.)

So then what are your thoughts about Russia fining a woman 50,000 rubles for hosting a support group for homosexual teens or removing a monument to Steve Jobs because the current CEO of Apple said he was proud to be gay?

Would you say that Russia was using the current law to target any instances that could be potentially perceived as being pro-gay and not just propaganda? If so, what do you define that as other than persecution?

russia sucks and i have no control over what they do. im bi and my gay & trans friends are always at my home. they are normal people. they dont force an agenda nor give a # about one. they are around my kids and they all are respectable people. we never even talk about politics or any of it. it is the last thing on our minds. i just come here to let my thoughts out and read up on the latest crazyness. so go off. its all you, queen.

Ok, but the topic is Russia wanting to expand a law that already persecutes people in non-traditional relationships. If you know Russia sucks, why would you immediately come into the thread to support the law?

Oh, I wasn't commenting on the Russian Law, just on how not "promoting, accepting, and letting the activist groom our children" is somehow a sin here.

It is not gays and lesbians that are banned, but the promotion of such relationships.

Uh huh. no this is because putin is a Self hating closeted gay and he dont want to be tempted by men. some of the biggest macho guys have been gay.

Also that bill does criminalize showing their gayness in public if you really think about it. Another hitler-esque thing puti poots is doing.

You said it’s adopted this policy in the headline but go on to say it’s only been submitted. Huge difference. Authoritarianism on either side of the isle on this issue is wrong. Pretty ugly stuff.

Authoritarians are now only in Britain. There, the queen really rules ..... I forgot how many decades. And the upper house of the so-called parliament is generally hereditary.

I tried the gay lifestyle for a while but nah it's not for me. Their taste in enterainment is just crap and if nothing else the green hair dye was costing me a fortune.

Back to the daily straight grind for me.

I could go along with this. I don't want to hear about anyone's sexuality, be they straight, gay, or whatever.
