There should be ZERO resistance to banning these type of rifles. Make them like controlled rocket launchers, dynamite, hand grenades, etc..

What logic is there for keeping them in society?

I'm going to go find an assault rifle thread and see if this question has already been answered acceptably.

That's why I said Law Enforcement needs to learn how to be flexible. Head and Leg Shots are now the preferred places for bullet(s) to hit the assailant.

I have to disagree on the leg thing. It sounds catchy that we're gonna shoot them in the leg and make sure we take them alive, but that is not your purpose if you're a cop on the scene. Your purpose is to stop them, and a leg shot doesn't guarantee that. If chest shots aren't working, go for the head. Forget about the legs unless you have no other shot.

I read a fantastic writeup by an FBI agent on this very subject years ago that I unfortunately don't have a link to. But leg shots can be unreliable. Depending on exactly how you hit them, they may be able to just keep fighting, especially if they're on certain drugs.

Soldiers are trained to be aware of this as well. A lot of the reaction to being shot in places like the arms, legs, shoulders, even the gut, is psychological. If you are trained to realize that you're not hit in a critical area, you can keep fighting.

You have to hit them in a place where it causes serious disruption to their body's physical ability to function. That's the chest and the head.

Two people familiar with the investigation said the initial evidence indicates the gunman bought the weapons used in the attack shortly after his 18th birthday — May 16.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was hospitalized with gunshot wounds following the school shooting in Uvalde, according to a Department of Homeland Security official briefed on the matter.

The agent was shot in the head and leg, but is in good condition and is expected to recover, said the DHS official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to give preliminary information about the scene.

Officers and Border Patrol agents placed themselves between the shooter and the children, multiple people told The Washington Post. The gunman had barricaded himself inside the school, but the officers and agents entered the school and exchanged gunfire with him.

I was thinking that if a shooter is in a crowded hallway and you miss his head 4 times and hit 4 students/teachers, that could be bad too.

Have there been any shooting events where law enforcement shot the "public" while trying to shoot the assailant?

Last I heard was in NY, cross fire and shrapnel from LE hit civilians.

Luckily no one died, if I recall.

You might be interested to know that 10 years ago the most common type of weapon used in mass shootings was handguns. It was only after the media started focusing on these rifles that mass shooters starting using them more, because they know they will get more coverage that way.

A number of these shooters have been shown to have studied media coverage of prior shootings. The media sensationalizing them is another part of the problem.

Banning them will do nothing. You can easily accomplish this type of shooting with a handgun. It's been done before.

Thanks. That article is assuming the shooter is not wearing any form of bulletproof body armor. But it was interesting learning that there are actual terms for different shots. That was new to me.

America needs to emulate countries where the mass shootings, and violence in general, are low. It probably is based more on conservative, common-sense upbringing more than anything.

That is part of the reason why law enforcement is trained to shoot for the chest. It's a bigger target, less likely to miss and hit someone else. The other reason is, as I said, that is one of the areas where if you hit them it will most reliably stop them.

We’ve seen active shooter events in the past where the shooter was wearing body armor. In this scenario, the only option of immediately disabling the threat is a headshot.

Or a neckshot headed for the spinal cord.

My mistake in linking something you wouldnt bother to read.

The mental health crisis in this country is beyond the pale, it is a travesty of colossal proportions.
That is where the problem lies, not with guns.
