It's a photo from an African safari with a made up story.

Wolves get bigger than that, no need for hyperthyroidism.

Probably a wolf with mange, although the spring in the coat is interesting.

It looks like a Hyena. Maybe someone owned one and it got out? Subsequently, this guy killed it.
Not all Hyenas look the same and this looks like a well fed one.

I haven't read through all the replies, so if I missed something I apologise.

But I am 99.99% sure that is a brown hyena also known as "strandwolf". Native to where I am from.
Those pics are pretty similar to many other hunting pics you can easily find on good old Google.
I guess someone just wanted to make up a cool story or it's an animal that was imported / bred specifically to be hunted. Which is kinda sad because it is also the rarest type of Hyena.

It's a perfectly ordinary Hyena, and the picture was taken in Africa, not America.

The guy is a professional game hunter

The picture was taken in Africa, it's a hunting trophy from a professional game hunter on an organized trip. Perfectly ordinary.

This thread is a perfect example of why information dissemination is an absolute mess. A huge swath of society is simply not interested in getting to the answer even after it is handed to them ... again...and again...and again.

You simply can't fix that level of willful ignorance and it is rampant in all communications and all levels of society today.

This thread is for asking information on strange and Crypto stuff - Sure it turned out to be a hoax but how many other post like this have disappeared good photos and such and have good info . You can only ask or post to find the truth ........

You are missing my point and for that I apologize. It wasn't that this was not an appropriate thread. It is that the definitive answer was posted early on showing this was from a guys safari hunting trip to Africa and once that is done, speculation should end. However, speculation continued and the definitive evidence was posted again and again yet people keep speculating.

This is a sign of the overall lack of consideration for getting to the truth. It makes people not want to contribute when posts are clearly just not even bothered with. It is also a general problem with society which was my point. People can be spoon-fed the truth and still willfully remain ignorant.

This isn't with respect to contentious issues that may or may not be what they seem like political or government shadiness. This is rampant even with a basic fact discussion like this. It highlights the difficulty of getting the truth out to people in a general sense. My comment wasn't meant to pick on anyone in particular, just to use this thread to illustrate how bad the problem of bothering with the truth really is.

Google Brown Hyena and it will show you people hunting these and other Hyena's. They look very similar to these photos with other people on a hunting trip who also took photos so it was not shot in West Virginia.. 😒

Who are you attributing that quote to? You have a false perception you are perpetuating.

Chasmaporthetes ossifragus (Running Hyena)...?

They lived in the US around 10,000 years ago, but are considered extinct.

Maybe they aren't as extinct as we would like to think, much like Australia's Thylacine.

Obviously that's an Australian Shephard.

Kidding. If I had to guess its a Hyena. In West Virginia? Hmmm. Maybe its mothman's puppy. Dammit, why do these guys always gotta shoot everything? I would have tried to tame it. Would make a helluva watch um whatever... Or maybe its a West Virginia Mountain Squirrel. Man, what is it with West Virginia, always weird critters turning up there.
