Medieval Iraqi minaret damaged by Explosion. (moved from ATSNN), page 1

After Golf War 1 and up to today, heavy critisisme has been expressed on the use of ancient structures as bases and military posts.
These structures range from pre-egyptian times to 10th century AC and have an immense historical and religious value.

The destruction or damaging of any of these structures is a great loss of history and heritage for all of us.

The Malwiya, 52 meters high, spiral minaret from the ninth century was in use during the last few months by American troops as a watchtower.
This came under heavy critisisme, because the minaret now was a possibly target for insurgent attacks. About a week ago the Americans left the toren. Inhabitants of Samarra think that the explosion was caused by rebels to prevent the minaret to be used again by the American army. The top of the Minarete was laid in ruins by the explosion.

I hope that this newsstory is a rare occurence and that no more historical treasures will be destroyed or damaged.

When the taliban destroyed historical buildings in Afghanistan, the western world and the US brought this into the press as the work of evil.

Now they are causing the destruction of equaly important structures by involving them in military strategy.
