The Mind and the Brain. Seperate entities?

Not sure if this is the right forum or not ... but here goes.

In various books and literature that Ive read, several authors contend that the Mind and the Brain are in fact 2 seperate entities.

They seem to say that the human brain is in the human body, however the mind is somehow *some where* else. The brain is used for logical thinking and control and perception of the (5) sences. The mind is closer to the relm of the spiritual - associated with higher intuition.

I would like to hear your opinions on this. Do you believe this theory to be true? Does it have any validity?
Or perhaps do you believe that what people believe to be the mind is just a (lesser known) part of the brain?

I agree completely. The mind is more like who you are (what makes you you). The brain is just an organ used to control your body.

Since you agree with the theory - Where then (in your opinion) is the mind located?

In outer space? LOL.... in another dimension?

What is the relationship between the mind the brain and what is commonly called 'the 3rd eye'?

Sorry to throw so many questions out there, but I think that it can be a fascinating topic.

I think that the mind is not so much located but it is pretty much the same thing as your soul. Basically the very thing that make you you. The third eye is just another term for any kind of psy abilities. I am not sure what causes those.

Well whatever my brain is faraway and my mind is in my body i am serious.

I agree with the idea of a seperate mind & brain. An analogy I would use would be; our body is like an atom. Our brain is the neutron and our heart the proton.
The soul/mind is the electron revolving and charging us.
We can't see it, but we know it's there.

Woah thats a good analogy, I like that. Yes the mind and the brain are very different, we all know where the brain is, but the mind for me is all around not just inside but outside as well, understanding my surroundings.

The brain and mind are separate but 'apart' of the same entity.

The mind is made up of the "conscious", "subconscious", "superconscious". It makes up the "imagery",etc., parts of the brain. It is also been compared to one's 'soul'.

I also believe they are two different entities. The Component Levels of a Human Being actually consist of 7 planes plus the Etheric Body. In psychology, the 4 lowest planes and the etheric body are part of The Personality which lasts only for one incarnation. Every new incarnation creates a new personality. The 5th, 6th, and 7th planes, however, are part of The Individuality. That is the unit of Evolution and is immortal throughout all of a soul's incarnations. (The Witches Bible Complete)

With the views you have, I think you would be very interested to read Jung's psychology theories. They are very enlightening. He believed that the psyche is composed of "three separate but interacting structures: the ego (center of the conscious mind), the personal unconscious (houses repressed or forgotten parts of the conscious), and the collective unconscious (a 'storehouse' of latent memory traces of our human and even prehuman ancestors)." (Personality Theories, Basic Assumptions, Research, and Applications - Hjelle and Ziegler; 3rd ed.)

The mind and brain being separate "things" makes sense... depending on how you define "mind". If by mind you mean... soul, or spirit, or general being, then I do believe that they are separate entities.

But then again, I have no idea how our human experience works. After all, what we perceive to be our soul/mind/spirit might just be a result of the chemical processes in brain and our overall collection of experiences (that is, the experiences that our brain is able to store/reconstruct).

As a spiritual person (I guess), I tend to think that I do have a soul that is somewhat separate from my body/brain. I say "somewhat" because they're obviously not completely separate during life (since living people consist of both body and soul), but the soul is only separated from the body at death. And since no one can really know what happens at death, I can't even say that for sure.

... but it is interesting to think about.
