“The delta is so important that we’ve actually decided to minimize science activities and focus on driving to get there more quickly,” said Ken Farley of Caltech, Perseverance’s project scientist. “We’ll be taking lots of images of the delta during that drive. The closer we get, the more impressive those images will be.”
“Self-driving processes that took minutes on a rover like Opportunity happen in less than a second on Perseverance,” said veteran rover planner and flight software developer Mark Maimone of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which leads the mission. “Because autonomous driving is now faster, we can cover more ground than if humans programmed every drive.”

I doubt China having a rover on Mars looking for life has anything to do with this expediency

The time has come for Percy to go find the Aliens so for the next month the rover is driving itself (using AutoNav) to the prime target of this mission , the river delta.
NASA have decided that getting to the river delta is so important that science activities on the journey will take a back seat on the 3-mile trek.

Looking forward to Perseverance getting to the delta and the start of the main event, find the Aliens ... Dead or Alive.

I absolutely hate that we only get motivated when we are going to lose out on some milestone.

Actually, that's a bit unfair. Look at what had to happen to get rovers onto Mars in the first place. The scientists and engineers that got that accomplished pushed the envelope over and over. It's a lot easier for China since they didn't have to do that engineering. They just steal it.

But we must not forget we have had this ability since maybe 1970 and they wait till the Chinese are going. That stinks of hiding data and now they need to beat the Chinese there to protect their narrative they feed/perhaps lie to us concerning. The Radio controlled robots have been around for decades and that is all these rovers with cameras are in the end.
