I suggest you read that thread linked above from Valhall... If Russia sperated their modules the remainder of the ISS would immediately start spinning out of control and its orbit would begin to degrade. The only way spaceX can prevent it is to already have something docked before the separation...which isnt likely to happen in time. Once out of control there is nothing anyone can do...abd Russia can do all of this from the ground bypassing the cosomonts ability to refuse.

I have always believed the blue star would be a radioactive source (Cherenkov radiation). So far I know of no space bodies that use nuclear power. I suppose it would be possible for the space station to become sufficiently radioactive if someone nuked it in space...

we sent men to the moon in the 1970's(i don't think they went in apollo, but i believe they went)

that was 52 years ago, you don't think the US could just throw a docking module on a variety of military missiles or even use some sort of other type of craft to rescue them?
