Michael Andretti is heading back to Formula 1

The Andretti name is synonymous with Motorsport so it makes sense that it should once again be a part of the top tier global race series that is Formula 1 , Mario Andretti has confirmed that his son has applied to enter the F1 Championship with his team which will be called Andretti Global competing in the 2024 season.
Michael Andretti had one less than successful season as a driver for McLaren in 1993 so welcome back and better luck this time Mr Andretti.

It would be great to see a new team in F1.

However, if they are looking to join by 2024, then the development curve would be very steep unless they take over an existing team. Their Sauber deal fell through, so that may only leave Williams as a viable purchase, considering Frank Williams has passed and his daughter Claire isn't running the team anymore.

If, as stated in the video, Andretti wants to build an all-American car then I can't see it being ready by 2024, much less, competitive. The engine alone is a challenge - going from Indy V6 2.2 litre twin turbos with 500-700 Hp to F1 V6 1.6 litre turbo with energy recovery technology, getting close to 1000 Hp is a massive headache.

Also, the engines and peripherals are limited in number and have to last for the whole season. If the engine, turbo, ex-KERS, etc. total is not enough then new components can be used, but at the cost of grid penalties. So usually, poor reliability means you're always starting from the back of the grid.

The guy mentioned Porsche as a possible engine supplier. It would be interesting to see Porsche in F1. I believe they are already supplying engines for the Indy races. Can they step up their game to be running in F1 in only 24 months? If this is the solution the problem would then be that the car wouldn't be 100% USA, like Haas that is already in play.

I'm hoping that Andretti can weather the F1 storm and get those cars on track. It may take years for the car to be a serious contender, and the real R&D has to be done in a racing environment.

Ok, I did some digging and found an Italian Motorsport article from yesterday.

I had no idea, but apparently, Andretti had made a move on Williams. Unfortunately, the deal fell through. Now I understand that if Andretti could have taken over an existing team, they could avoid the $200 Million entry fee a new team is required to pay.

So, it's literally back to the drawing board to design a car from the ground up. The engine department is still my biggest concern.

Also, the article mentions that the team is based in Indianapolis, which would be a costly and logistical nightmare when having to move the whole circus across the globe, considering only 5 of 23 races are in the American continent.

On a different note, I'm overwhelmed by the ATS community interest in F1... I think we should have a dedicated forum! 🤔😉... crickets...
