Dune, it's pretty good, even if you didn't read the book

So DB got me thinking about Reacher, but I dropped Amazon Prime and then I used Duck Duck Go to search anyway LSS I don't find it anywhere, so now I got too watch something

Don't ask me how it happened, it's not like it was planned but for some reason Ive never read "Dune" well I never finished it. That was about way back when the original movie came out, and while okay it wasn't enough to get me to finish reading the book. Which I'll usually do if I like a movie, but this time I didn't. So

Now Im gonna have to read Dune, because this movie hooked me a little bit, as a good movie should.

So it starts slow but it's got Rebecca Ferguson in it and I'll watch anything she is in, once it gets going though it brought back what I had read way back in the '80s it follows what I read. They really did a good job adapting to the big screen. The rest of the cast is damn good too, you know when you are watching a movie and you forget it's whomever the big star you are watching, and you get lost in the character. Well it happens multiple times in this one first of all Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides was so good I couldn't place him till really late in the film, Javier Bardem as always makes you forget it's him brilliantly so like I was watching and said this guy is good, then realize it's Bardem so does Stellen Skarsgard. Once it gets going it flows at a good if not great pace and the scenery cinematography were top shelf. Only briefly did I think Thanos, when watching Brolin during a battle scene but otherwise he was solid.

But mostly the reason it works is because of the reason I haven't watched it till now. I didn't think I would believe Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, I watched the trailer and said nope, not gonna watch because of him. Really though he was perfect atleast in part one, I didn't think he could do the action scenes which were believable enough, but so far just an amazingly damn good movie for how skeptical I usually am. Lastly, Zendaya, while she didn't "really" appear till late in the film, she brought it as well. My dad used to say how a good actor can act with their eyes, well Zendaya with her spice-stained eyes does phenomenally well, it's good to see when a good director takes a young hot talent, and weaves them into the story and makes you again forget who they are, very surprising. Especially since she was in the recent SpiderMan movie.

The acting is impressive, as is the music, the visuals however are the most incredible thing about this film, it looks awe-inspiring. The battles are epic enough, the staging is impressive, you almost feel close to the action, but it isn't so frantic you can't follow it.

easily 8/10 for a skeptical old dude in 2022 that ain't bad at all

That 80's version i watched was some of the dullest crud I have ever seen. I kept passing out. Gave me a bad taste and made me uninterested in this new version.

Like I said it basically stopped me from finishing the book.

All I remember about the original, was the big guy floating, Sting, and the crappy CGI, but for what it is worth much of the '80s to me was a blur.

and that one had crappy actors and even Lynch said he hated it. This one has vastly superior actors

Is this Academy Award-winning well no, not unless they buy it, but it's a decent enough watch. In the last 3 years, I can count on one hand the movies I semi enjoyed.

I remember waiting for the first attempt to make it into a movie. I went opening night. Thought it was going well until I realized it was almost over and they had spent most of the movie on the first chapter.

This one though was very well fleshed out, it's just that there was no indication in the promos that it would only be half of the original book. So yeah, to finish the book they will need another movie.

9/10 from me for the new Dune movie. I did read all of Frank Herbert's Dune books after seeing David Lynch's version.

I have a love/hate relationship with the books and the old Dune movie. I love the worlbuilding but the writing itself is a bit meh.

Despite the old movie being very flawed some of its better moments always merged inside my head into a far superior version. It's like my brain restores it to what Lynch hoped to do but didn't quite pull off or something.

The new Dune movie by Denis Villeneuve is a masterpiece and I am extremely happy that part 2 got greenlit.

I like the new version better than the 84 one, but I think they missed the mark with some of the casting. I'm not sure if people realize it from the movie, but if I remember correctly, Paul basically slaughters the galaxy to unite it. He becomes a tyrant. I haven't read the books in years, but I remember Paul going a different direction than I expected early on.

I read the whole series before the movie came out. They absolutely followed the book in both movies as far as I am concerned. We are barely into book one on the new movie. The other one got thru book 2 when it rains on Arrakis. What you missed by not finishing is how the worms survive on the planet at such a size and why there is no rain. There is a "sand trout" that doesn't come into the story until book 3 "Children of Dune".

The Science I love in this is the "weirding module" self defense tool and the "Thumpers" to call the giant worms to ride them. The suit they wore to recycle body waste was interesting but not something I hope we need in the future.

ETA For MSC
I have watched the one with Sting and it is clear to me they followed the book very closely. The people they picked to play the parts fit the writings of Herbert. I read the whole series twice and I have read the whole Asimov "Foundation trilogy twice" . I loved them both so much. I want to see the Foundation made into a movie.

That is not how I remembered it. They set it up perfectly with the attack. Then Paul escapes meets his future life then and learns to control his God like powers then he leaves to take back Arrakis.

There will be differences in the interpretation of the book but I like the effort in both. There is a William Hurt as Duke Leto mini series out there too. I don't recall much on it.

The mini-series with Hurt looks like it's on youtube at least here in America episode 1, and interestingly enough fan edit of the 1984 film. These sometimes can be done very well or sometimes they are but hey it costs nothing

Now ya tell me. I wish I had known. I was expecting the whole thing. It's pretty rude though, telling only half a story but waiting to see how well it sells before producing the second half as there were no disclaimers announcing that the first was only going to be half a story.

The last one was his granddaughter I think trying to explain how the "God" Paul morphed into became and was rather boring indeed. Each chapter started with a brief history episode that set up the chapter. I did NOT reread those portions of this story.
