If you end up owing them anything it will be required in order to check payment status.

Not in all cases, if you use a preparer or third party software your status is updated automatically.

I wonder if this system could be used as a form of voter I'd?

It would certainly kill of the Liberals argument about id being discriminatory against minorities without ids.

That's at minimum 5 years off and most likely 10. Even the earliest adopting state of mDL/EID, Arizona, has no current plans to incorporate voting into their ID scheme.

Not giving my biometrics to a private company just to deal with the IRS. I’ll continue skirting the line with my $100 returns every year. Even though government definitely already has mine after processing through Meps back in 2011, and they made us stand in front of a machine that made some grid on our faces. Pretty sure it was for biometrics. That doesn’t mean I want to give it out all Willy nilly to every tom and hairy Uncle Sam decides to contract with.

That’s military. But don’t worry, the government is so disconnected and so convoluted within each agency they don’t know who is who in their own office buildings.

Say what you want about authoritarian governments, and I've lived under one or two, but a universal single id card system would prevent a lot of voter fraud and would help to fight illegal immigration.

If you need a federal id to do anything and everything illegals without id will find themselves locked out of life.

It's coming.

Which will be funny for the ones who want voter ID but are against mDL/EID.

Said it before, looks like I'll have say it again...

Retired state tax agent and former professional tax preparer here.

The IRS (and ALL Federal and State agencies allowed by the IRS to have access to taxpayer information supplied to the IRS) are Required by law to Insure the security and privacy of taxpayer information provided to those agencies by the IRS[/i.

Failure to protect taxpayer information is a violation of the IRS's Security and Disclosure" protocols and can (read: WILL!... seen it happen to errant co-workers) in fines and/or imprisonment.

I do wish "Americans" would learn more about the actual workings of our government before making so many paranoia-fueled assertions.

Biometric controls placed on access to an account is one way to prevent the kind of data hack that resulted in millions of taxpayer records being stolen several years ago (2015?) the Intuit tax professional database.

I just had to go through this to set log in and see my outstanding balance (I owe the IRS and have a payment plan).
It let me log in first with my standard user name and password but then still made me do the ID.me to go further.
It said that viewing all past info required the Id.me account setup.
It also noted that in the future, viewing return status, etc. would require the Id.me account.

You DO have to upload a bunch of stuff to set up the Id.me account.
This included letting your webcam biometrically scan and match your face to the front of your driver's license that you have to upload. (You also had to upload the back of your ID)

Then, there is a short Q/A where you verify some background info (like when you are retrieving your credit report).
AND I guess that is about it. I will say that with my glasses on, it didn't recognize my face as a match to my ID.
BUT once I took them off, it did.
My photo on my ID is about 10 years old (and a significant 10 years; age 40 to 50).
