IT was NEVER A success except for the guy's at the top of the pile though for that short few decades leading up to the oil crisis of the 1970's and then downhill from there until it reached the credit crisis it appeared to be successful (in fact back in the 20's and even up to the LATE thirty's strike leaders were being assassinated, taken to be murdered and thrown down mines were they would never be found and disappeared with the blessing of corrupt police and even members of the intelligence services - secret police - within the US so in fact it was never all rosy though tell people something enough and they will begin to believe it especially if you dumb them down with chemicals in the water and sprayed in the air and onto there food).
Communism (totalitarianism from it's beginning), a perversion of Socialistic ideals rather than what they really mean but that is another debate entirely.
NOT successful at all except for the ruling Party (Once again those at the top of the pile, smell something here?).
The most successful was when government's tried to regulate import's and export's, subsidised there industry's, part owned or outright owned some of there most security essential industry's such as Energy Sector, Water and vital infrastructure WAS a success until both of it's enemy's attacked it, Commies by subverting the trades unions and capitalists by arguing against it and claiming they had the answer to the flash strikes that were crippling western nations because of the Commies, two hands on the same body if you don't mind my saying so.
Nations were this form of Social Democracy worked included Great Britain, Scandinavian nations, France and a few others including to a great extent west Germany up until the aftermath of the Thatcher years, the commies attacked it from within and the capitalists from without.
So sadly there is no ideal situation, think about it like one size shoes a great idea but they wont be comfortable for everyone and that will always breed discontent and revolution no matter what system you adopt.

But for real. I believe in the biblical story.
There are two reasons:
- Prophecy has come true. And much of that prophecy coming true was not known until the advent of the internet.
- This is just a personal logic. I think that in the end, you will get what you want. And what you want is what you deserve.

There have been SOOOO many things we took for granted as truth, but at some point it turned from socially accepted wisdom to utter ignorant buffoonery.
I think there is an interesting ignorance happening in our country right now. And there are sections of the population that are blinded by what they "believe" are truths. When in fact they are as true as visible air. At some point society will wake up, maybe after its' destruction, and see it for the childish tribalism it was after it was too late. The cause and the solution may be visibly evident at that time too. But that time will be fleeting. Eventually children will be born whose priorities will match those of the ignorant in any time period.
It is quite evident we are missing something. Not a totalitarian leader, president emperor or ruling class. A true leader that has no fault and can be trusted by all sides all people and at all times whose legitimacy is not questioned. My hope and want is that this king will return and never leave us. I do not deserve this, but it is my hope and wish and belief and answer to our conundrum.

Science Fiction was once a genre that was based on things sciency.
Now, science fiction is less about science and mostly a genre based on fantasy - elves, gnomes, magic . . . worlds dominated by girls playing bad tempered women with magic powers . . . mud huts, thatched roofs, dirt streets, no sanitation, no technology . . . and always, always horses . . . and these "worlds" are portrayed as idyllic.
(I have news . . . women do not actually want to live that way in ANY future)

Blame Harry Pot-herb for that one as well as a whole host of weirdo's that plagiarised just about every genre out there.
But IF you want to READ something that kind of mixes fantasy and science fiction (which are both arguably fantasy but have there own corners in that ring), it's old now but I read it back when it was new then I recommend Julian May's Pliocene exile series of book's.
Favourite Character for me was a guy called Aiken Drum, you'll get it if you read it.
In a quick synopsis of the story a fixed time portal that only goes to one epoch in the past and can not be moved is discovered at a time when Humanity has already been contacted and inducted into an interstellar community of super advanced aliens, humanity's psychic potential is explored both in the future and in the past and it turns out that in this fantasy world Humans are MOSTLY not from the earth at all but were two species of offshoots of the same race from another galaxy that had a very long history, these two descendant factions had waged holy war against one another for so long while isolated on there world that when there world was re-inducted into there own galactic community they had fled to another galaxy, aka the milky way and specifically to the earth, once there temporary truce was over they started there religious war against one another all over again.
Then some humans - there descendants from millions of years into the future started to appear among them, only latent and non psychics were allowed to go back but one faction of the ancient aliens had technology called Golden Torques that allowed them to both control and enslave the new arrivals and also to open some of there latent psychic powers.
The two factions were a dying race that closely resembles Tolkien Elves but are basically a race of good looking A holes whom are naturally latent and whom the radiation of earth makes almost infertile making there birth rate very low whom developed the torque technology for there own use to enable them to access there considerable latent psychic powers and the other race are the source of myth's about goblin's, troll's etc but are equally human just ugly and brutish (a result of an ancient nuclear war back on there shared home world during a galactic conflict in there ancient history) but while weaker than the Elf like human's naturally psychically gifted and with no need of the Torque technology to unlock there lesser psychic potential.
Mix this with a plot twist at the end of the book's that turns a bad guy into the good guy and a link to the most advanced alien race of the future and it made a great read.
For Sword and Sorcery no one beats Tolkien.
Movies and TV show's, let's be fair the script writers can't all be Tolkien or Heinlein so if we have to give them credit even if it is often disappointing what they churn out nowadays.
But even the show's that get lambasted often have some great episodes and story arc's, just look past the gender politics and so called wokeness and you will see some great story's.
It's Anime and not perfect but point in case is if you give Blade Runner black lotus a go it actually has a good story, a replicant out for revenge whom may or may not be Wallace Jnr's assassin designed to dethrone his father and set the stage for blade runner 2049 filling in the plot holes between black out (another anime in the series but also with a good story) and the sequel movie and while I preferred my imagination for what the story of a sequel to the original blade runner should have been I have to admit that 2049 was one of the best sequels in any science fiction franchise if not story intensive enough and too short to go over the complexity that the franchise deserves so my hat is off to it's creator even if I would have seen it done differently.
There is still good science fiction and also always has been bad science fiction so just take the good with the bad sometimes.

Yeah. I mean, just sitting here thinking at times about the all of the crazy things we as a collective hold to be true right now. Knowing it is not true and that the narrative will change. Then looking to our history as a guide. OMG are we jacked right now! We are so jacked!
The woke crowd is a cyclical thing. The same thing that is happening right now happened in the late sixties. To an almost exact T. Nixon was impeached in the early 70's. Carter was elected. The economy tanked. Our foreign policy was so jacked we went from Nixon to Carter to Reagan. I'd say Nixon = Trump, Carter = Biden, Reagan = whatever is coming next.
The trick to this is the internet. For all the horrible confusion for the weak minded followers it has caused, it is the best possible history book. So the internet will actually wake people up to the cycle. Not now for sure, but I'm not that smart. I'm not the only one noticing these cycles. And I'm only smart on this I think because of my knowledge gained from years of internet consumption.
