Canada's Baby Seal Slaughter

Canadians love to thumb their collective noses at the U.S. and remind us all how much more enlightened they all are.

Well, it turns out that it's not quite all of them. Take a look at this article, and then consider not only the barbarians doing the killing, but the rest of the Canadians that show their approval by doing nothing to stop it.

Do you really care about the seal hunt?
Is this a thread in response to a Baby Iraqi Slaughter thread made by a Canadian? Do you hold a grudge against Canadians or is this just a thread started in hopes of arguments?


Since you have decided not to comment on the seal hunt, I will.
The Seal hunt is barbaric and should be governed far more closely. Anti-hunt activists say many animals are skinned alive and die in agony. That practice is just wrong and things like this happen all over the world. It is sickening.

300,000 seals can be killed this year and Large-scale hunting will be allowed to continue until their numbers fall to under four million. This is much like any other hunting season. It is the cruelty that goes with seal hunting is where the problem lyes.
Canadian regulations require that hunters ensure their prey is dead before moving on. But this does not seem to be happening.

People are going to boycott Canadian sea food. This does nothing.
Seal pelts are at an all-time high of $57. Those who oppose the hunt ought to target buyers, not the fishermen who desperately need the income from the pelts.

Might I also add that if the Seal hunt did not happen they would eat up alot of fish and depleat already overstressed stocks. I agree the cruelty has to stop, but really how can we police the entire hunt? We are a small nation with limited resources. We cannot be expected to be there at every kill to make sure it was done humanely.

Stocks are overstressed because the regulations are weak in the regulation of catches as well. Fishermen are depleting the fish populations, harvesters are depleting the plankton and algae. There needs to be more stringent government regulation across the board.

I agree, you should just post the article with your opinion on it and not just take a jab in your opening.

Regulations are worth nothing if we do not have the manpower to enforce them... hopefully this new military spending will see that is what happens. It will not be an overnight change though, and I won't be holding my breath in the meantime.

Nobody enjoys the pictures shown yearly of little white seal pups being bashed in the skulls by heartless fishermen who have honed their head bashing skills on large cod on the open sea.

But I bet there's lots that look down their noses on such doings but feel no remorse at ordering baby beef liver or a chicken sandwich. Of course there are no videos of calves chained to doghouses and milk fed until ready for the slaughter or all those chickens caged like lifers on a populous death row.

It's amazing how someone can have the juice of a good steak dribbling down their chin as they postulate on the cruelty of the seal hunters...

If there's anyone that has a right, it's a vegan...

I like mine Sautéed in a nice ginger soy sauce served over rice....

This is as old as humanity - if it moves, kill it, cook it, eat it and wear whats left over....

Hey, seals haven't been hunted commercially where I live for decades, and now their numbers are really on the rebound.

As a matter of fact, the little critters are starting to show up all over the place!

Seals wander up local rivers.

Unfortunately for us, one of the unintended side-effects of protecting the seals has been the resurgence of Great White Sharks in our waters. The big critters are starting to show up all over the place!

Nature has a funny way of screwing with us mere humans, eh?

Do you folks even know why they're slaughtering seals? Canada has been performing this act since the early 70's, again with plenty of controversy and liberal protests on a regular basis.

The big hoopla over this years slaughter has to do with the increase from 170,000 to 225,000 something dead seals.

Massive seal cull begins

Thousands of hunters armed with clubs, rifles and spears have begun the world's largest seal cull on the ice floes off eastern Canada.

Turning the ice red with blood, they killed hundreds of pups during the first day of the annual harp seal hunt.

The cull, which has been the target of protests since the 1960s, will mean the slaughter of up to 320,000 young seals on the floes and islands around Quebec's les de la Madeleine in the Gulf of St Lawrence.

Hang on a minute! What do u think goes on in slaughter houses all over the world? Where do u think that nice pretty packaged meat comes from that u buy in the supermarket? Animals are slaughtered all the time, its not nice to look at but most still eat meat and we allways will do, as long as we are doing it for a purpose then its ok.

HELLO!!!! HELLO!!!! CANADA CALLING>>>>>>>> The only thing I find offensive about the harvest of seal pelts is the waste that the hunters leave behind on the ice. I should be able to buy Grade A Canadian Baby Seal at my local butcher. I have never hunted seal myself, but I support the harvest of a natural resource that many hard working people depend on. You seem to paint Canada's people with a pretty broad brush. I deeply respect the United States, and her people, and consider our neighbours to the south to be allies and friends. I think you need to scrub your own pot before you start calling my kettle black. Your people hunt on the land, in the air, and out at sea. You hunt each other in urban jungles that are out of control. 300,000 seal pups are cute and fuzzy, but so are the millions of calves we carve up for veal steaks.

Take a stroll into your average pigfarm in North Carolina (upwards of 80,000 pigs in one building).

Wander into a beef slaughterhouse and watch them eviscerate live cows.

Go to a dairy farm and watch the cows, all hopped up on Monsanto chemicals to make them produce more milk, as they stumble around with HUGE udders leaking pus all over the floors.



Sure the seal hunt is barbaric, and yeah, it should probably stop. But get off your high horse and realize that this is no isolated incident. How many cows are slaughtered every single day in North America? Are you shedding a tear for them, or is just the cute animals that don't deserve death?

I know that humans are fishing cod down to a level that the species may never recover. But the main food for all these cute, fuzzy seal pups is cod.

Have you seen the price of cod at the local grocery store lately? It's just about the most expensive fish in the freezer. If they even have it in stock.

Culling the seal population and the catch restrictions put on Canadian Fishers will go a long way in helping cod make a recovery.

To me this a barbaric act and totally cruel.
