Nervously, Jade dialled in the number. She'd been worrying about this all week - should she call? Maybe it would open up wounds that needed to be
healed. Maybe it was just better to leave him alone - maybe he'd found a new girl already...
Jade still had a pain in her chest, even though the break-up had happened two weeks ago, which was why she'd put off calling until now. It was only
yesterday she realised, I don't have any time to dwell on this! I've got to get it done and over with...
She pressed call. One ring, two rings, five rings... Once upon a time Jed would be on the phone before the second ring even had a chance.
After seven rings, Jade was considering hanging up when the eighth ring stopped and Jed said "Hello?"
Jade stopped for a second to take a breath. "Hello, it's me, Jade," she said nervously. "Your ex," she added.
There was a pause on the other end. "Why did you call?" Jed asked quietly.
"I just called to say...I'm sorry. And to wish you well," Jade anxiously replied.
"Jade...you don't have to worry about it too much. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't, okay? I don't hold any grudges, but don't go
chasing anything that can't be brought back. I wish you the best."
Jade was about to say goodbye and hang up, but she suddenly blurted, "Have you found a new girl yet?"
Oh, I'm really, really glad this isn't a video call, thought Jade.
"No," Jed answered, a bit awkwardly. "Well...bye."
"Bye," Jade replied. "Good luck." Then she hung up.
Well, you do what you have to, Jade thought. And it isn't that bad if you get it done and over with.
