SANTA MONICA, Calif. (CBS) A car plowed plowed through a Santa Monica farmer's market Wednesday, killing at least eight people and injuring at about
40 others, 10 critically, according to initial reports.
Witnesses said the maroon-colored sedan, with what appeared to be an elderly driver, sped through the pedestrian area at 4th Street and Arizona
Avenue, bowling over people and vendors' booths shortly after 2 p.m.
Witnesses also said the car appeared to have been going 80 mph as it flashed through the area, but that has not been confirmed.
The car came to a stop at Second Street and Arizona -- the end of the two-block market area where witnesses there were several hundred people. Its
front windshield was smashed from the force of bodies and other items that apparently hit it.
