My buddies dad had a business phone at his house. It had multiple lines. We used to call two competing businesses, and have them answer at the same time. It was so funny listening in. They both thought the other one called. They had some funny conversations. Sometimes we call the same business, and people sitting next to each other would answer. 60s, those were the days!

the best thing that could happen to everyone is for all social media to stop existing. next would be to make your phone only a phone. If you doubt me, ask someone who lived in the 80s.
AND.........We can crank call people again.
Ring ring..........heavy breathing, ha ha ha, click!
And they will never know who did it!
AND........ they will laugh, or get annoyed and MOVE on with their life!
That is how it should be!!

As reported first at 10am there was a Whistle Blower.
Then they said an employee did some "update" thus causing this huge issue.

My point is, there are other avenues of communication. We communicated just fine before Facebook.
Ok, I'm going to zap out of nostalgia and back into reality.
We need to stop lying to ourselves about Facebook. Yes we communicated before, but never as efficiently as we have with FB. It took us into a new realm, a FREE real.
Let me give you an example.
Being a military brat when we would move overseas we either could write letters to our statesides friends, or we could call them at a cost of about $75 per call. I'm not even joking. So basically we lost touch with most of our friends. Facebook solved that. Facebook also gave cell phone companies a run for their money. Telecom is a scary beast. They would take your last cent if they could. Facebook stopped that in a way because they allowed people to communicate in a similar way to phone, but BETTER. There is no going back.

Can we please go back to AskJeeves days!
I remember the good ole days of Q-link and Compuserve back when I had my Commodore64 and just a tape drive and 300baud Modem.

Haven't read through the thread yet, but does anyone else here have a thought that maybe they are scrubbing some data?
My father used a voice pager back in the 80's for his business and I used to call that prefix hoping that whoever was out in the public answering their pager and I would leave a god awful message for them.

These kids have no clue what a RUSH crank/ or prank if you will, calling was.
We would crack up so hard. Isn't it amazing how something so stupid could entertain us so much!

Back when 13.5MB's of RAM was huge?
I didn't have a computer until 1999. We spent all of our time riding bikes until we got licenses and then it turned into driving around for hours and listening to music.

Oh my goodness, I have to share my pager story now.
Sooo back in the day, I was in IT for telecom and pagers were my specialty.
We would tell employees that EVERYTHING was monitored. Back then we had logs and could read EVERY single message.
I would literally grab my lunch and read away. It was better than a soap opera! Lots of affairs. "oh baby this, Oh baby that". Some of you guys were very sappy and disgusting! We could also see who was paging who and what time. We could see some shady stuff between departments too.

I think it matters because hundreds of thousands of people use these platforms to communicate. If they are controlled by TPTB and go down - hundreds of thousands of people cannot communicate and share information.
Yes, I remember the days before even the Internet existed. There was no news. No one ever heard about the assassination of JFK, or the Korean War, or anything like that. Heck, we didn't even know who the President was!

I am not even discounting what you said.
But when the government wants us to stop sharing info....I know we need to do the opposite.
For example, the parent groups I am in, we share valuable info on the critical race theory that is being pushed in our schools. We share stories in the various schools about abuse from staff over masks.....about vax info, etc etc.....We need a platform to share this info. And FB is all we have, unfortunately.
The school/parent groups is just one factor. While ATS provides a wealth of info....it doesnt work on a small time scale such as local issues.
I know you get where I am coming from
